I was tired of bad quality phone recordings that I use to improve my playing at home and I thought that was time to upgraded. I saw hundreds of videos, read reviews and listen to samples. At the end I was between the Zoom h2n and the Zoom h4n pro.
I decided with the last one because you have the xlr input and besides music, I also have done a few short films. So the Zoom h4n pro could have more uses.
After having it for a month and although I know I still havent explored all its features I am more than satisfied with the sound quality.
Besides guitar practice I also used to record a concert (I went there as an spectator, not that I was a sound tech) and I was impressed. I have my own private bootleg now!
The only con that I could find is the short battery life. The batteries included with the recorder lasted 4hours max.
I used to own the H4, which I used very regularly to record gigs either direct from the desk or using the built in X-Y mics. There are some improvements to the H4n which make it far superior, like the ability to split tracks within the unit itself and a new power saving mode. Build quality is also improved and it comes with a good plastic case to protect it. I'd recommend buying the mains power supply which is available separately as you'll eat a mountain of AAs if you rely on battery power alone (sound files won't save if you run out of power mid recording so be warned).
