Despite the low price, this unit sounds to my ears exactly as the higher end units from the same brand. It sounds good enough to be used by more advanced players. It has tons of simulations of stomp boxes and amps from the most known brands and they sound pretty accurate. It has 100 memory banks to save patches (they are already used, but you can delete the ones you don?t use and create your own) This unit is very minimalistic button wise so, the patches can?t be created very quickly. It allows using five effects in series in every order you want. You can change all the parameters of each effect exactly as you would if you were using the unit it simulates. The changing between patches is very fast and unnoticeable. For the time based effects you can choose to set the time manually or choose a time figure (quarter note, dotted eight, etc) and set a global time (in BPM) so your delay is perfectly in time with the rhythm, for example. It has a stereo 6.3mm jack output (it can be used as mono but you will lose one channel of the stereo effects because they will not be mixed together) that can be connected to a Guitar Amplifier, a mixing table/PA system/audio interface or headphones, to practice. When you connect it to a Guitar Amplifier, some details must be taken into account if you use an amp simulation both to improve the sound and to avoid damages to the amp (check the manual). This pedal by itself sounds very good, even when compared with units that cost several times more, but you will need a good output system to make it justice (good headphones, a good quality and powerful PA, etc. The USB port allows firmware upgrade only or can be used to power the unit (you can use a PC or a USB phone charger to power it) if you don?t want to use batteries (4 x AA) or the power supply (not included). This unit doesn?t support Patch backup or import via USB. The enclosure is made of plastic, so I recommend you to be careful with it.
My background: I do 5 gigs a day, in 5 different venues, 5 days a week, for 10 months of the year. I have only a couple of minutes to setup and start my show and pack up just as quick in order to get to my next gig in time. Practicality is my biggest importance. This is the reason why I don't use an amp.
This is why I think this pedal is one of the best pedals you can buy! It has almost everything on it, its small, and its cheap! The amp and cab emulations are decent. The effects are all satisfactory.
I went from using a pod hd500x to using this because it can do a very similar job, at a quarter of the size, and fraction of the price. Also this pedal has an acoustic simulator that makes your electric guitar sound convincingly like an acoustic, which the hd500x doesn't have (without using their Variax guitar of course)
Sound quality is good on all amp and cab emulations. It has so many effects to choose from, including some great compressions and they all do a great job! The hd500x no doubt sounds better than it, but when you play in pubs, bars, and venues with anything less than the best PA system, you wouldn't notice the difference.
It's only downfall is the quality of the pedal. It?s made of plastic and if you were to accidentally step on it the pedal will break... But having said that... I found out that stepping on a hd500 in the wrong place will also break it... which is the first reason I actually bought this pedal. Its also a lot cheaper to replace than the hd500x is! you could buy 6 of these for the same price as one of those
