Picked this guitar out because I was after some P90 tones, and the quality of the build and hardware appeared to be really good. I'm glad to say I wasn't disappointed. The build and finish are flawless. The brushed matte finish doesn't pick up finger marks and looks like it will age gracefully. Apart from a little intonation adjustment, the setup was flawless right out of the box. The neck feels fast and has a nice SG type profile, a little chunkier than my old Mustang, but very comfortable with a beautifully finished fretboard. The guitar has a great resonance even when played acoustically, but when you plug it in that's when the fun starts. These are easily the nicest p90s I have heard, quiet, balanced and with a clean, hot output. The variation in tone from bridge to neck goes from a glorious shiny twang all the way to deep rich jazz tones. The tone control is quite effective and the pull switch "coil tap" sound is actually more useful than I expected. Overall I'm delighted with the Revstar, so much so that it's become my main squeeze, edging out some much more expensive instruments. Get one, you'll love it
I play a lot of different styles of music, ranging from 70?s disco to 90?s grunge to hard rock and even metal from the 2000?s. I usually get by with a T-style guitar with single coils, but I?ve noticed a craving for a little more ?muscle? in the sound.
The P90?s in this Revstar provide me with just the right amount of muscle combined with clarity. I?ve tried a lot of P90?s by different manufacturers, and I would honestly put these up there with the absolute best ones on the market. Pristine cleans on one end and absolute brutal distortion on the other. Combined with the dry switch integrated into the tone pot, there isn?t a tone this beast CAN?T do.
The build quality of this guitar is really good. Fit & finish is on par with guitars twice as expensive and the hardware seems really well made. The only, tiny little niggle and the reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that my dry switch didn?t initially work properly. Some contact spray and all seems well!
The neck is a comfortable, medium to medium chunky profile with a good roundness to it. Yamaha's been kind enough to make the heel of the neck a bit more streamlined than what we?re used to seeing on traditional single cutaway guitars by big brands. It makes a difference as access to the upper frets is made easier this way. The frets are guite large, medium jumbo, and add to the effortlessness of playing this guitar.
I can honestly and without a doubt recommend this guitar to anyone looking for a well balanced, easy-to-play and versatile guitar for rock, pop and everything in between. This particular model comes with the steel wool finished top, which is a real finger print magnet, but as long as you're aware of this and ok with it, you're good to go!
