Finally, there's a new trend in full range PA cabs of giving more power to the high end frequencies, an absolute must for live music (particularly vocals and brass) and an added bonus for DJs. Usually, these type cabs have a ratio of 4:1....e,g, 400w to the driver, 100w to the horn. This is absolutely fine in most situations, but can lead to blown diaphragms in compression horns when the higher frequencies get too much. With the Yamaha DSR 115's, the ratio is almost 2:1.....800w to the main 15" driver, 450w to the horn/compression driver. And instead of the normal 1" compression driver, it's a 2" upgrade. Now there's no power struggle! It doesn't make the cab sound too 'toppy' either, but you're just reassured that the extra high end capability is there when you need it. Very sturdy and quality wooden cabinet, a manageable 28kgs and nice full face grill. In fact the only complaint is that it maybe looks too unobtrusive!
I've used these both alone and partnered with 18" active subs. Alone they sound very capable with recorded music. I'd recommend using the FIR 'loudness' button to boost the lower end, but you will genuinely struggle to clip or 'red light' them in a medium sized room of 200 people. With the subs (I used RCF 4Pro 8003's) the whole sound just blew me away. Perfectly balanced with almost no knob twiddling from me, I couldn't believe my own ears! I was sure I should be touching buttons and adjusting something or other, but it simply sounded awesome without my help!
Comparable cabs are currently the RCF Art 745A and the EV ETX 15. Having heard the RCF, there's certainly a very rich horn and a lovely thudding bass, but it's a plastic cab so it seemed a little too bright for me. The EV was...well, EV....sweet highs, well-defined lows but it didn't seem as powerful as the Yamaha and the RCF. And of course, the Yamaha is almost £250 cheaper per cab than those mentioned here.
Highly recommended for live and DJ work, if you're in need of real power!
Two Yamaha DSR 115 working with the right bins you won't be looking for more power , I using them for karaoke , When using microphones the extra power is great for someone who sing in low tones all around great tops
