Update: FIRST, the fret markers on the fingerboard are protruding and killing the notes or otherwise afflicting normal note articulation, creating wolftones and muffling the notes played etc. Bass is UNPLAYABLE before sanding and leveing the fretmarkers and fingerboard. (Initially, I had thought it was a set up issue only as it did not cross my mind the supposedly reputable guitar maker would allow such an egregious fault to slip through.) You can feel the fret markers as you slide your fingers along the fingerboard. Avoid this bass if you don't have the skills or the money to fix this major issue. SECOND, Thomann did not tape the inner box. Bass slid out of it and arrived with broken tuners.
(Now original review) I don't like the idea of 'relic'-ing guitars as that amounts to basically degrading a new instrument and not much else. However, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the process on this particular bass appeared möre akin to the effect on the "antiqued" decorative objects that my mother buys, than willfully inflicted actual obtrusive damage.
For a poplar bodied bass, this feels slightly on the heavy side (probably around 9 pounds). But it's a resonant instrument that sounds good just played acoustically. Plugged in, it sounds what a decent Jazz Bass ought to sound like, without the hollowness and brittle treble response of an ash body and maple neck specimen. The pickups are fine (I never understood the vain consumerist obssession with "upgraded" pickups. If the output level is good with a full-range frequency response, all I further expect from a pickup is that it reproduce the sound of the WOOD faithfully.)
The best J neck I came across on a Jazz replica. It's not too thin front to back and has some heft to it unlike, say, many of the cheaper Squiers etc.
Comfortable neck Feels good Sounds good Looks better than expected (re the Jaco relic-ing job) It's a LEFTY!
Somewhat on the heavy side Discard the relic thing and give me a nice 3-ply black pickguard to go with the (overdone) screw holes...
