I don't think there is an acoustic bass guitar on the market with such a powerful unamplified sound as the Stanford Robot. Really nice, deep and satisfying to the player. You get to hear the bass loud and clear from the soundhole which is positioned close to the player. Amplified sound is not bad either with little feedback, but with just a single tiny fiddly volume adjuster on the soundhole, I miss control over the tone directly from the guitar. There is no strap button on the heel which I miss, but these are minor points when you get used to this really nice instrument. I would go so far as to say the Robot, with its large body and solid bracing pattern, facilitated by the unusual positioning of the soundhole, is the only acoustic bass I have played which can hold its own unamplified, in an unplugged session with other acoustic instruments. I think it has been designed primarily as an acoustic bass where it is at its best. I also like its quirky looks. I detected a bit of fret buzz on the E string and a fair bit of fret noise, but I think this is par for the course on this type of instrument.
