I wanted to try something else to replace the Slapklatz due to it's limitations. I ordered these because these were very cheap, and thought they could do the job. Well, no. The sonic impact is noticable, but not in a good way. The felts are way too stiff, so when the felts touch the drumhead, the sound becomes sharper, and the pitch rises slightly. The exact opposite of what I wanted. I may try to alter this product, but still. Otherwise, the mechanics are good, they can rotate and you can adjust the strenght of the touch on the head, so this is a half-good solution. But don't use it on small drums, only 14" and above, and maybe on kick drums. Too big for small toms.
I often play in small group situations, and way back used to use some Rogers external dampers, now unavailable. The Stagg version is actually much better engineered than my old dampers. Solid, weighty feel, reassuringly strong, the unit clamps onto your drum rim via its own integral drum key, and you can vary the angle of its attachment slightly; a knurled ring adjusts the height of a thick felt pad above your drumhead; it can be adjusted to barely touch the head and subtly cut down the vibration, or it can dampout all reverberation. I have used moongel (bit messy) and e-rings (easily creased when packing away), which both work well but without the possibility of easy slight adjustment during a gig that the external dampers offer, and they keep well away from my striking area.
