I am a student who commutes every day on a bus, so my guitar needs adequate protection from the general public and other risks such as falling over while the bus is in motion.
A rigid hard shell case was quickly ruled out as an option for several reasons, the main ones being: they are too heavy and difficult to carry with only one hand, and are very expensive for an Explorer fitted case.
Looking for a lighter (and cheaper) option, I set out looking for the best quality and value for money gig bag I could find. The ones below £50 such as the Ritter and Roksak bags looked flimsy and weak, the straps and zips looked like they would fall apart after a few weeks, which has been the case with several gig bags I have owned in the past.
So what if you could buy a gig bag which has all of the protection of a hard shell case, with the portability of a light gig bag?
I found the perfect storage solution in the 'Rockcase by Warwick Soft Light Case'.
While it's certainly not the cheapest option in the gig bag category, I spared no expense for wanting the best protection for my precious guitar, while still being able to actually carry it on my back.
It features two very comfortable and high quality leather padded straps which can be attached to the case via heavy duty metal hooks. The straps can be removed and stored inside two zipped pockets on the rear of the case so they don't trail along the ground when you're carrying it by the handle. Inside of the case is a soft black velvet material that you'd expect to find in a hard case, it even has one of those little covered storage spaces inside. The case is backed by rigid but light foam and is shaped perfectly for Explorer type guitars. The two outer pockets are very handy for storing my tuner, cables, strap, cleaning cloth and sometimes Boss stomp boxes.
If you don't want to break the bank (or your spine), but you really care about protecting your guitar on your travels, this is definitely the case for you.
This Rockcase is great in many ways. It's very safe while transporting a guitar within it. Our studio has some humidity, so this case also takes care of that. Easy and quite light (as a case, not a bag) while walking with it, as it has shoulder straps. Only one little problem - my Jackson Warrior didn't quite fit in it, as this is mainly Explorer case. But there is only about 5 cm. difference so I manualy cut the material and re-attached it. Took about 10 minutes. Besides this small thing it's very good.
