It's hard to rate a classic but, well, there's a reason it's a classic...
Over the years I have tried pretty much every new invention in the field of drumhead evolution, always hoping for some marginal gains in sound. Every SECOND set of heads is always Remo. I just come back to those on toms over and over again. They don't have a long list of ultra-modern computer-design technological acronyms under their model name, but somehow they can't be beat (pun not intended) when it comes to the clarity and dependability of sound and ease of tuning.
Somehow Remo just got it right the first time around.
I use them for tom bottoms and I've yet to find something better that would give longer resonance or more body to my toms (one set is maple Pearl Masters MMP, the other - mahogany Gretsch Catalina Club Studio).
PROS: fat, solid, dependable sound when used as resonants on toms, ease of tuning, staying in tune
CONS: none, really. Some people shy away from the cracking sound during the very first tensioning, but trust me - it's a GOOD thing. That Remo resin that you hear cracking is the thing that keeps them in tune. Just ignore it. After the first tuning you'll never hear it again.
