Randall RG 1503 - Probably the best solid state heavy amp in the world
This thing is amazing, especially at such a relatively cheap price. If you want a great heavy metal tone look no further. It's similar (apparently) to the RG100 Dimebag used, and you can definitely get a great Pantera-like sound from it. Having said that, playing with EQ you can get loads of different tones out of it. If you want some sort of Metal/Hardcore/Heavy sound which will blow off some heads, this is for you. I play an ESP with an EMG 81 pickup, and I love what I get from this amp. I've got a small Laney IRT212 cabinet which I use at home. Amp sounds great with this, as well as with bigger Marshall cabinets I've used (better on the Marshall). By the way even on a small 2x12 cabinet this thing is loud as f*ck!
Minor cons: Only one EQ for all 3 channels. Annoying when switching to the clean channel, although the clean tone by no means sounds terrible on the same eq settings I use for the dirty channel.
It is noisy. This is a very high gain amp so unwanted noise is to be expected (hum/buzz). I use an ISP Decimator II G-String to shut it up. This works brilliantly, so no longer an issue. I highly recommend getting this pedal with this amp.
Pro's: Heavy!!! Simple Reliable FX Loop Plenty of tone options to chose from Cheap Excellent if you hate your neighbours
I ordered this from Thomann to the UK, and it turned up in good time with no issues. Came with a UK plug. Completely happy.
Although its lack of features lets it down, on the whole, this amplifier delivers where it's supposed to: sheer metal power. By lack of features I mean the fact that all three channels share the same eq and this can be a problem if you want, for example, a different eq on the clean channel. As I bought the amp head relatively recently, I'm still going through the honeymoon period and I have yet to suss out its full potential. Furthermore, I seem to be having some problems with the settings of the amplifier in that, when I use the head at rehearsals, there is an almost unbearable increase in volume level if I switch from channel 2 to channel 3. Apparently the two channels are NOT to be used interchangeably like, say, Rhythm channel and Lead channel (I thought that was the case due to Channel 3 being slightly louder) and for that reason one will need a separate boost for lead parts. Other than that, this head is an excellent update of the classic Randall Century 2000 heads favoured by Dimebag Darrell Abbott.
