To be honest, these are the first monitors that I own, but I've been at my share of studios, and I know what a monitor does and how it should sound like. And I've done a lot of research before opting for these monitors.
And I'm glad that I did. No offense to the studio standard Yamaha's, I personally like the definition and the sound these KRK's produce. I know the Yamaha's are supposed to be very flat and give a natural response, and that when you're used to working on them, other monitors won't cut it. But I just simply don't like the flatness of the sound Yamaha has, and in my opinion, any monitor can be a benchmark for you, if you get used to something, you always know what to do in the mix when you listen it on the monitors you got used to. Now, why not get used to a monitor that sounds good to you? ;)
For me, that's the KRK's. I'm definitelly glad I bought these. You won't hear a bad word out of my mouth (or a bad letter from my keyboard in this instance, right? ;) ) about this monitor. And I'd recommend them to anyone who's not thrilled about the standard Yamaha's. I don't mean to diss a great Yamaha monitor, they would not be used if they weren't that good, so they're definitelly a ''studio standard'' for reason, but I'm just saying, there's a great alternative for people who aren't in love with the Yamaha's ;)
These monitors sound great and well balanced: I have read all the reviews and seen that some people rate these as 'over egged' &' 'bass heavy', 'flattering' etc...
I have to say, that in a nice room and positioned correctly these monitors are the business at their price point. Let's face it, £xxx is not 'cheap' by any means - so you expect results. These monitors really do sound good - and listening to my old mixes did show several things:
1/ I could hear errors that I had made - the detailed midrange was very good. 2/ I could really hear the top end, especially the hi-hats. What was smeared before was really crisp and defined here. 3/ I could enjoy mixing and listening at much lower levels due to the fullness of the sound. 4/ The bottom end extension was solid and gave a lot of information. 5/ The KRK's sound travels well; so what you hear on them will sound acceptable on other systems and vice versa; obviously this gets better as you get more familiar with them.
These monitors do run hot - I was concerned, but come winter they will cut the heating bill :)
The KRK's feature level, bass and treble controls allowing you to tailor the response; important because not everyone has a perfect room. So, if you have to put these closer to a wall than you would like - well, you can turn down the bass.
The user manual/guide is good and full of tips and suggestions regarding placement and settings.
