Right outta the gate...
TrunkBumps 28.02.2019
Well, I've only had an hour with it so far and I'm blown away by the sound. It's nothing like the Tanzbar 2 (which is also a fantastic drum machine) but it BOOMS like nothing else I've heard- seemingly much more headroom that most other drum machines allowing for more volume overall too. The sky is the limit with this thing! Love at first listen is how I personally feel about it. I've read other owner's comments on various forums and one thing they all agreed on is that the Alpha Base sounds HUGE and does not sound like ANYTHING else out there on the market, and you can add me to that consensus. This is just another example of premium German engineering and design.- at it's finest. I am so grateful that thomann carries this amazing instrument and sells it at such a fair price. I only wish I would have discovered thomann years ago; I could have saved myself a lot of money. But, back to the AB...If you make dance music, techno, house, industrial- this a must-have drum synth. It can do other styles too of course, but it excels at the genres I mentioned. Now, it's possible that I will encounter a bug or two as I explore all this magic box has to offer, but it doesn't change the fact that it sounds AMAZING:) and I'm sure Jomox will support it completely and update the OS when necessary. Like I said, it was Love at First Listen for me:). If you're on the fence, just read the manual and learn about the features and see if it fits in your workflow. Now, back to the beats:D Thank you thomann, and thank you Jomox!:D

Great Sound. Bad Interface.
Andre1865 11.12.2019
I purchased this box with the intention of using it for live performance.

I already own the Elektron Analog RYTM which i think is a very good drum Machine but sadly, it is "too much" to use intuitively in a live performance beyond simply muting things and some basic actions.

I was in the market for something as simple as a Roland X0X style Drum Machine, but with a high spec sound and the ability to be able to shape and push the sound enough to not get bored with it..

So essentially, something as playable and enjoyable as a Roland TR9089 / TR808 but without being limited to the same sound pallete for the rest of human history.

the Alpha base seems to offer this, and it does have an impressive sound but for my use case, it is not suitable

the thing is built well and feels solid and is well spec'd with its features etc and would be a great drum / sound design tool for studio use, but using it live felt like more work than it should be.. so, be aware of the User Interface limits

Incredible
Dugan Nash 03.08.2022
I never leave reviews, but the Alpha Base has impressed me so much it has left me no choice. It is an absolutely fantastic sounding machine, it sounds more like a work of art rather than a product. I would describe the sound as warm, juicy, and natural. It hits quite hard while remaining gentle on the ears. I have owned and played a lot of quality drum machines and it quite effortlessly sounds much better than any of them. It's sequencer isn't as advanced as an Elektron or Cirklon, but if you need that kind of control it has full midi implementation for all the channels and their parameters. That being said, the limitations of it's sequencer tends to inspire rather than inhibit, you get very musical results quickly with it. Build quality feels quite solid and sturdy, nothing beats steel and wood. The UI is also quite easy to work with, very minimal menu diving and the parameter layout becomes muscle memory after just a couple sessions of use. Bottom line, it's the most fun I have had with an instrument in a long time and it simply sounds better than anything else being made now or in the past.

what a monster this is
breatheasy 22.09.2019
I bought the alpha base on thomann a few months ago.
It's a really easy to use intuitive instrument and since i've had, I have pretty much been absorbed by the possibility of playing it standalone at a party with a midi keyboard hooked up to it to trigger the 2 sample and fm synth sounds.
(my other drum synth is the vermona drm1- very nice, but this alpha base is something else!)
pros: very fat, warm, hard hitting punchy sounds from all the instruments. The kick drum is just beautiful. 64 step sequencer with parameter lock. very easy to change parameters while playing, min. menu diving. nice to have effects available(reverb and delay).
cons : the bpm is a bit off even with the last update 1.4. The synth is a bit temperamental. ( i lost a kit while fiddling with the live record. No idea how). Despite that, the alpha base is phenomenal.
