Plenty features for little money (but with dreadful instructions)
The 'features per pound/euro/dollar' rate of this kit is fantastic. 8 TRS line ins on the back with XLR/TRS combo connections on the top (each with individual 48v phantom power and gain control), 6 TRS line outputs, 2 individually assignable headphone jacks with their own volume knobs, plus SPDIF and MIDI ins and outs. That's a lot of IO.
The mixer/monitoring software looks a little basic and lashed together (particularly the MAC version) but it does the job ok and once it is set-up there won't really be much need to use it too often anyway so not a big issue. Now that it is connected up properly the communication with my MAC (OSX 10.9.4) seems solid, stable and glitch-free (though I haven't ventured into the very high frequency/bit depth territory yet).
The thing that lets it down if anything is the instructions, particularly those for installing the unit in the top part of the Icon QCon Pro controller. These are totally inadequate and misleading. You will need to remove the whole top panel of the QCon (not just the blanking plates as described). Another slightly confusing thing is the new labelled blanking plate that holds the rear of the UMIX1008 into the QCon; this blanks off the UMIX power socket (which is ok as it is obviously powered internally from the QCon) but leaves the USB socket accessible which kind of gives the impression that it is needed for digital audio-> computer connections. Nothing in the instructions gives the impression that this socket should not be used but connecting it produced all manner of bizarre connection and power issues. Basically, leave this new USB socket disconnected - all normal QCon controller MIDI data and UMIX1008 audio is handled through the normal QCon USB socket - one single connection to your computer.
That's only a minor thing though as once it is set up and working you will never need to worry about it again and if you are using the UMIX1008 as a stand-alone audio interface then it's obviously not a problem anyway.
In summary; features are great, the price in low, build quality is solid, audio quality seems great so far, software is functional but not very pretty and the instructions are really not very good.
