Pros: Fast neck and easy access for small hands; good fit and finish. The price! Cons: Default string gauge is wrong; pickups could be better.
I've bought my Ibanez RG8-BK after having researched a lot about eight stringers and their various neck widths (Schecter, LTD, etc). As I have relatively small hands, I wanted to be able to tackle an eight string guitar with the (sort of) same ease as my other guitar, an Ibanez RG550, so I could focus solely on learning how to use the two additional strings to take my metal and prog-rock needs to a higher level. The RG8 allows me to do so, as it has one of the thinnest necks around.
The guitar was dispatched and delivered in Thomann's usual and reliable delivery system. The outer packaging was excellent and proved to be resistant as I tried hard to open every single layer of air-filled plastic and carboard. As I had already ordered the case from another supplier, I was afraid that the delivery could eventually damage the guitar, but it was perfect in every aspect.
Fit and finish was excellent for a guitar made in Indonesia (good finish on the neck, and basic but robust looking hardware) and the guitar showed already having a nice set-up from Thomann's own team of experts, with proper intonation, sweet action and neck bow. Personally, I like my guitars with a touch smaller action, but nothing that couldn't be corrected afterwards.
The guitar came with the standard 8 string gauge for an Ibanez RG8 BK, which is actually not the greatest of ideas: .64 is a small gauge for the lowest string, needing a thicker gauge to produce a tighter low end.
The only drawback, and this is just nitpicking, because this guitar costs less than 400 euros, is the pickup set. They lack clarity (a bit muddy on fairly high gain amps) and should have a higher output. Having said that, it's a great platform for modding. Better pickups, and tuners, if you play live, will convert this guitar into a brutal beast meant to satisfy your eight-string cravings.
This is a true beauty. My first 8 string and it did not disappoint. Firstly very economic and for people who want to step in the world of 8 strings it definitely beats the competition at this range. Why? Because it has perfect scale length, the fretboard is extremely comfortable and the pickups are surprisingly good. Very easy to play. And the tone is killer !! Obviously pickups can be swapped but the stock ones have very sweet tones. I changed the strings to thicker ones because the stock strings, especially the top one was w bit too flabby. The wood seems also very good as I like the resonance when I play it unconnected. Definitely recommended !!!
