I've bought this pedal because two main features: its small form factor and the flexible choice of functions. Wah and Volume pedals are well known for their dimensions and their difficult integration with full pedalboards; this HoTone little gem facilitates its integration due to a cleaver design. The materials are rock solid and the feeling with the pedal is good. After a quick period of learning, even the player used to have a regular sized pedal under his feet can easily pull great sounds out of this effect. Thus, what appears to be a con at a first glance, quickly becomes an opportunity and you can leave the wah in place in your permanent setup in your living room. What has been the most appealing feature for me is the possibility to select different roles of this pedal: besides the wah effect, with the actuation of a linear side switch, one can set the pedal to be an effective volume unit, also selecting the volume range by means of a potentiometer, or use it as an expression pedal in association with a stereo cable. I do not used the Soul Press as an expression pedal yet but the volume function is smooth and very effective. I never considered buying a wah pedal before because it doesn't meet my musical style but this product is usable even when not used as a wah: volume is far more useful to me!
At the end, my overall opinion of this swiss knife pedal, mainly considering the quality of its frequency sweep range as a Wah and taking into account the price, is that it is worth having one unit of this in your pedalboard!
Pros: Small size (potentially a negative) Solid metal enclosure Still includes battery compartment Versatile (with limitations, see below)
Cons: NOISY POT "Bottom Value" is easy to adjust by accident and difficult to set precisely or when you're looking for it. Only one output for all functions Slightly awkward activation with the toe button
The build quality is excellent, and the audio quality was initially excellent but the pot quickly collected dirt, so it's now very noisy while in use and makes it unusable in some situations, particularly volume swells.
The limitations come from the awkward mode switch, with no easy way to tell which mode is active. Additionally, switching to the expression pedal mode means the guitar's signal is interrupted. This could be solved by having one output for wah and volume where the guitar signal is routed, and another for the expression that doesn't require you to remove the cables from the pedal to switch modes.
Overall the pedal is very very cheap compared to anything else this well built, and is pretty much in a category of its own (mooer folding pedals aside), and strongly recommended as long as you're prepared to live with potential noise or disassemble and clean the pot yourself.
