I play a wide range of music styles and wanted to modify a guitar for versatility, I was after a neck pickup for clean sounds and though Gibson or Fender straight away, as I was used to using Humbuckers, I went for this (Which is 4 conductor and can be tapped/split). Fitted it to my guitar effortlessly, sounded great. The sounds are warm and works well for drive sounds also. I'd say that of this price range it is one of the better sounding pickups out there. The item arrived in a secure plastic enclosure with all documentation neatly stored beneath. For anyone looking for a nice warm sounding clean tone, or subtle drive sounds then this is definitely what you want!
As far as I know, the main difference between this and the Gibson 57 Classic is that the 490R has a four conductor wiring, so if you're looking for the 57 Classic tone but need an ability to split coils, this is the pickup to buy. Furthermore, unlike the 57 Classic, the 490R is available with a chrome cover. It's a warm sounding humbucker that is great for jazz, blues and other styles that don't incorporate extensive amounts of gain. It is fairly bright but has a prominent midrange that might make it too muddy and undefined in some cases. I wouldn't use it for rhythm as it's too woolly for that but it's an excellent choice for playing blues solos.
