This seems is an excellent case -- much better than the previous one I ordered which I sent back. I have only just got it but am very happy with my purchase.
Good points include:
-- Extremely lightweight. May be lighter than my Gewa 'Liuteria' violin case (without the instrument in).
-- Secure fixings with at least 3 levels of redundancy in order to know the case is safely closed when you pick up the instrument. It can be easy (speaking from experience) to forget to zip up the case!! [ 1) zip 2) lockable clasp 3) two layers of pop-studs ]
-- Gewa bow holders are great -- they have a positive 'click' feel when you turn them and you can be sure the bow won't come loose
-- Excellent, secure attachments for the shoulder straps -- they come with a little carabiner style clip to attach to the rings on the case, but with the extra security of additional attaching wires (these have a screw fitting), so as to be doubly sure the case is safe on your back.
-- Very comfortable on my back -- with the top of the straps attached to the corner points it sits low on my back allowing me to cycle very easily and safely carrying it -- my helmet does not hit against the case and I can look around me properly. You could attach the straps the other way if you wished and it would sit higher.
-- Adjusts for different sized violas -- there was no instruction manual but you peel back the velcro where the bottom of the instrument sits in the case, and undo the screws on either side. Then the padding can be slid forwards to accomodate smaller instruments. My viola is 16" and I only needed a small movement of the padding -- a really large (17"+) instrument may not fit in this case. The pad on the roof of the case can move if necessary -- this seems to hold the instrument down.
-- A reasonable amount of storage space in the accessories box. Certainly enough room for one block of rosin, pencils, a spare set of strings, mutes, cloths etc. But see my negative points below...
-- Music compartment does not extend around the side of the case but should be large enough for all but very large scores. You could carry quite a lot of music in here.
-- There could be more storage space in the case for accessories. A shoulder rest would need to sit by the neck of the viola, and you might need to be a bit careful about how it was placed. If you need to carry lots of spare strings and other random junk about, you might find this a limitation. They have optimised the case to not be too long, by placing the compartment to one side of the neck rather than above it.
-- Does not have a hygrometer but it's not a big deal for me.
