I read all the marketing hype and user reviews of the TonkerLite before making my purchase. Generally, the descriptions provided by manufacturers about speakers and pickups are reliable, despite the manufacturers having written it themselves(conflict of interest), so I was really looking forward to assembling a lightweight combo cab with a loud-but-balanced sound.
However, the TonkerLite's "self-descriptions" did not live up to claims of "nice round, balanced" or "thick," "clear," "clean," and "no harsh high end," etc. Eminence did call it a speaker with "less lower-mid meat," but that's the understatement of the century.
Neodymium is touted as being just as good as heavier ceramic and Alnico magnets in terms of strength, field, output, tone, etc. This is my first and only experience with neodymium and I only sampled a single TonkerLite. I haven't looked at Neodymium speakers in music stores in general. So this may or may not be indicative of all neodymium speakers and TonkerLite speakers. Nevertheless these are my observations:
When I tried it out, I thought the thing was damaged. There was virtually no bass or middle frequency response -- only top end. The bass and middle frequencies broke up very early on, at moderately low volumes, and the paper cone rattled horribly when the break up occurred--it's not a pleasant kind of break up. The output is far, far weaker than other speakers. I did an A-B comparison with Celestion Greenback, Celestion G12-65, Fane AXA 10, EV, etc. and found that the TonkerLite did not have even 20% of the output of speakers rated at 90 dB sensitivity. I also connected it to various amps: Fender, Mesa Boogie, Dumble, Marshall, and the results were the same: small, thin, rattling output.
