Acquired guitarist wisdom teaches us that there are pickups for the bridge position and the pickups for a neck position.
This may work many a player but I want to have a guitar that's tonally consistent, I want the sound to be modified only by the physical position of the pickup rather than its wiring etc. Which is why I always install same model on both positions.
So I purchased two EMG HZ H4 pickups to install into my Ibanez RG121 Prestige - I went for passive pickups because I didn't want to make necessary modification to accomodate the 9V battery.
Prestige original pickups were rather good but these EMGs somehow brought out every ounce of the natural sound of the guitar, the sound is more substantial across the spectrum which makes setting up your gear easier - you don't need an EQ to compensate for the pickups/guitar deficiencies.
Overall, the passive EMGs are a worthy option if you don't want to go with active pickups - whether for financial or other reasons.
This kit comes with everything you need to install it, including; a volume pot, a tone pot, an output jack, and all the cables.
Everything in the kit is high quality as you would expect from EMG and it all connects with their easy connect system. Very little soldering required, most things just connect with push-on clips. The clips are very sturdy and i doubt they would come off from any normal use for the lifetime of your guitar. You do need to solder the earth and i had to solder an on/off toggle but even for someone who has never done it before i don't think they would have any trouble.
The sound: Look on youtube, me trying to explain it would be fairly pointless. All i can say is i like it, a lot. Things like that are very subjective though. For the heavier style of music i play its perfect, and for a passive pickup it's very strong.
