One of my guitars is a low quality cheap acoustic that I bought simply to keep up my practicing when travelling, while not being too concerned if it got damaged, lost or stolen. The guitar has a poor sound and I have no love for it, but on a whim I decided to try it with a pickup to see if it could sound any better through an amplifier.
I chose the Dean Markley ProMag Grand based on the price, ease of fitting and removal, and because it is black like my guitar. First I tried it on the bright channel of my Fender Bassman tube amp. It sounded better but somewhat muddy. Next I tried it on my bedroom practice amp, a Line 6 Spider Jam, using the Aux input which provides a clean signal path bypassing the modeling effects but with optional presets available for acoustic guitars. The improvement in sound was amazing and for the first time I liked the sound from this guitar,
Some things I have not noticed anyone else comment on: The output of the pickup seems fairly low and I needed to pass it through a pre-amp to get acceptable levels on my amp without turning the gain up so high that background noise became a problem. The pickup seems to be quite microphonic, especially at higher volumes, and I have to be careful not to strike it with my pick/plectrum to avoid unwanted clicking sounds. Possibly mine is slightly faulty? Also after a while the sponge rubber pieces that hold the pickup in place becomes permanently compressed and the pickup becomes loose in the soundhole.
If I was buying this again I would prefer the convenience of the Dean Markley ProMag Grand XM for the same price but with the advantage of an inline plug and socket break in the cable. It would not be difficult to cut the cable on mine and attach a suitable plug and socket and I have even considered drilling my guitar to accept a socket on the body for a permanent installation.
Does a great job of amplifying your acoustic guitar signal. It looks pretty, too. I eventually sold mine however as I wasn't happy with running the cord out of my sound-hole. It tended to get in my way when playing. Others may feel differently of course.
