So we use an acoustic kit with mesh heads and DDrum Trigger + real cymbals, overhead mics and spot mics.
We want to trigger different drum software for shells, so the drummer coming to our studio can select a desired drum sound. (GGD, SSD, Drumforge, etc.)
Works great! (For rock/metal music that is) With the right set up, you'll be able to find the settings for your playing style. I've had 4 drummers testing it, it required around 10min setup time for each until we found the perfect setting and even dynamic drummers were very impressed with the response of triggers/DDTI. If drum software on PC/MAC is used, you gotta make sure you have a low buffer size for low latency, but the DDTI doesn't have any negative effect on the latency itself.
Handling: Short learning curve and a look into the manual and you'll be able to set up the DDTI in no time. This is part is the most crucial part to get right, cause if you don't, it won't sound/feel "right".
Features: Honestly I'm not missing anything. You just gotta keep in mind we're talking about triggers here, so it WILL be different from an actual acoustic kit, but for some tasks it may even be preferred as long as you know their limits.
Sound: (to not ruin the review stats, I voted 5 stars, but..) AFAIK the DDTI just transfers MIDI data, at least that is how we use it, so the sound will depend on the a) Drum module / Brain b) Drum library
We use only drum libraries (Triggers > DDTI > USB > PC) as they are the closest thing to the real deal IMHO. Even the latest Roland V Drum module sounds way too fake, which may be enough for live gigs, but in the studio (which is where we use this) we use only the latest and most modern drum libraries and the DDTI is simply sending the midi data to the PC.
Quality: It feels sturdy, doesn't seem like it's gonna break any time soon. It has it's own stand, next to the drummer/headphone mixer. Can't say anything negative about the quality, yet.
Would definitely buy again if I had to. Surely very specific field of use, but if you're reading this, you probably already have something groovy in mind :-)
