You can say that the Boss DD-3 is a real legend in the digital delay scene. It's a classic and features up to 800 ms crystal clear delay.
We have 4 modes (50 ms, 200 ms, 800 ms and Hold) and three knobs to control the parameters (delay time, feedback and effect level). The first three modes limit your delay time to the called number (50, 200, 800) while the Hold mode features a pretty unique effect: play a note and press the switch constantly down to make some noise and repeat the played note/chord in an endless loop.
Like I said before, the other three modes limit your delay time to dial your favorite delay tones in with the delay time knob. It's really easy and you get nice spacey echoes and also some cool slapback sounds. The delay is build like a tank, too - Boss standard. It doesn't have tap tempo, so if you need that - check out the DD-7!
Some people might say the DD-3 sounds lifeless and cold but hey - this is not a boutique analog delay pedal. It gives you clear delay tones, easy as that. I use two of them in my current setup. One for a little solo delay and the other one for crazy fast repeating delays while using pick scrapes.
I use this pedal to provide some slap-back delay as part of a much bigger guitar pedal board. As such I place this pedal in either the efx loop or as second to last in the chain going into the front of my amp (just before a reverb pedal). I tend to set it so that I can hear a single delay on individual clean notes a few msec's after the picked note. I then only use it on a driven sound in order to make things sound "bigger". As such it is almost always on as I tend to toggle my reverb on and off but leave this on continuously.
Being a boss it is built like a brick, and in testimony I've had it for nine years with absolutely no problems. It doesn't have a lot of features, but then again I view it as a "set and forget" pedal. If I wanted to play around with different delays during a gig I would try to buy something with more features, however for providing simple slap-back delay this cannot be faulted!
