Berhinger is really pushing forward in the market for bringing affordible high quality products to the mainstream users. (eg Berhinger X32)
The DI4000 provides 4 direct inputs that I personally tried and tested on a live stage with several guitars and other string instuments. I found the whole system very easy to use. The Attenuation Pad drop hot Signals by -20db/-40db and still allows good clean signals to reach my desk.
I did not notice any (colorisation of signal) from the unit. And if there was, it wouldnt be enough to make a difference to the to signal quality.
Only cons I can mention is to build Quality. The case itself is very good, the rack mount wings feel a bit on the cheap side. But are strong enough for the units load.
Buttons are plastic, and veel very mechanical. Outputs on the front is a bit of a pain for the way I have it setup. If Rackmounted on stage inputs are on the rear of the panel. I use it on Stage to basically convert 1/4 inputs signals from instuments to XLR inputs on my Multicore Snake.
But Its to be expected for this price bracket.
All in all, very good product for use on Stage/Home Studio.
Behringer's products are indeed very competitively priced and usually for the money they do their job just fine. However, this device is a complete junk.
I had to return the first one due to constant hum, noise and crosstalk. The second one was a bit better, but still utter rubbish. As at that point I already had purchased a proper rack mountable DI box from a reputable manufacturer I didn't even bother to return the device.
For touring usage that usually don't require such a good audio quality my device is not suitable, as rear power connector was faulty out-of-the-box and has severe contact issues. Speaks for the quality, well, the lack of it.
As comparison, even Behringer's own el cheapo DI20 beats this one hands down (and that's a pretty poor device, too). If I ever want to toy with this device in mixer input I must have a constant ~30dB attenuation due to noise the unit adds. That means the headroom is just horrific. Also, any unconnected (unbalanced) cables act as high gain antenna so for a permanent installation with eg. custom front panel connectors (that are not possibly always connected) this is an absolute no-go device.
Of course there's some good, too: The front panel led level indicators are nice. However, you can't compensate and justify the extremely poor quality of this device just by having a lots of nice flashy leds.
Maybe I was struck by an unlucky batch, but never again will I ever buy Behringer's DI boxes. This was the last nail in the coffin.
