Most Flexible DAW

In my time as a sound engineer, I have been able to use the top 4 DAWs around. Although Reaper and Logic are both great programmes; they don't not always seem to provide the same flexibility and compatability as Protools, with both external hardware and 3rd party software. Those applications can often become unstable with large amounts of outboard gear, such as a few different brands of interface running over thunderbolt or usb.

If you want to do anything other than musical work, protools accels in pure audio editing. However, for digital instrument work, the built in MIDI editor can sometimes be a pain to use. This is specifically apparent when changing a notes velocity, copy and pasting MIDI data and changing sustain and decay Characteristics; this is usually where Ableton is the most productive.

If you are looking to use sound effects, record a live podcast or need your session files to be accessible by other people, I cannot recommend protools enough as almost every studio will have protools as one of their DAWs.

Awesome beast for recording music!

While the software itself is efficient and easy to use, it doesn't come without challenges. I was lucky enough to be shown, in detail, the tips and tricks of using such a software by experienced lecturers. For those without this advantage, a certain amount of discipline is required if you want to learn the complete ins and outs. There can be no half-a**ing when it comes to recording and producing music.

With regards to features, Pro Tools 12 has a beautiful array of top-of-the-range processors and plug-ins, the next best thing to actual outboard gear. The MIDI capabilities could leave something to be desired by those with an interest in electronic music, with the samples lacking the same authenticity as those from the likes of Reason.

Regardless, if recording music with the intention of creating a flawless production is you goal, then this is definitely the DAW for you. Just keep in mind that the software is only the beginning, plan ahead and decide what equipment you'll need first.

(Note: Study the system requirements of the software before buying. At the moment, I'm running the software of a Fujitsu laptop. While it does the job okay, it's quite slow in some aspects. A computer with high specs is your best bet for a more fluid production.)
