Very versatile and great sounds - good value for money
I'm a strat player normally and I've been looking for a 22 fret guitar which offers something a bit more contemporary. Because I don't like 24 fret guitars, normally much as I like Ibanez, I know their guitars just aren't for me so when I saw this was 22, I had to give it a go. very happy with my choice.
The neck and middle single coils give all the "strat" style sounds you could want, and the JB bridge humbucker is a great all rounder for rock/metal. They balance well together and are well suited to direct mounting on a body like this. (The other model offers Di Marzio IBZs in the same configuration which I have in an old RG and are nowhere near as good!)
Trem is excellent - plenty of pull up available and it can dive like a floyd. However its not locking and for some reason Ibanez have gone with standard tuners. Locking tuners would have been a much better option and this is probably my only criticism of the guitar for stabilty. Very nice touch that you can lock it so you can't pull up via a thumb wheel on the back. You can also easily adjust the spring tension with a thumb wheel too, so no having to attack the spring claw with a screwdriver! Trem always returns to pitch (notwithstanding the non locking tuners)
Good action from the factory, although a little high. Easily adjusted to about 1mm at 15th with no choking. Truss rod is easy to get at, as the cover can be opened without removing screws (another setup pain avoided!). Frets are nicely finished although Ibanez claim "by hand" - I have a feeling these have been machine crowned, but its been well done. The wood is very tactile - its warm in the hand, no stickiness and no lacquer. I don't want to put it down!
My last experience of a "Premium" (Made in Indonesia) Ibanez - a Jem 70V - was very disappointing, a LONG way short of the Japanese made Prestige or a late 80s/ early 90s RG. However this guitar is right up there, and is well worth the money. The pickups are a great fit for the body wood (tonally) so I'd definitely say this is the better of the 2 models.
A couple of points to make about the Thomann listing though:
1. There are 22 frets not 24
2. They are not Jumbo frets, but medium
3. Its a mahogany body with a cap and not basswood.
Had this guitar for a while now and it is a very versatile and very good quality guitar.
If you are looking for a guitar which is good looking, good quality has a high spec and is versatile then this is the one for you!
You don't need to second guess whether the quality is good enough, Ibanez know how to make good guitars and the quality is definitely second to none! The quality is also evident in the case that comes with it.
The tone of the pickups is brilliant!
Combining the Seymour Duncan single coils with the Seymour Duncan Humbucker, you allow yourself to traverse into many genres of music! If it's Blues, Country, Funk, Rock and even all the way up to Metal this guitar copes very with with many styles of music. The 5 way pickup selector, also gives for very easy and clearly defined differences in tone.
The only downside I would say about the guitar is the input jack, it is quite far inside the body which sometimes makes it difficult when taking the lead out..but, then again once it's plugged in, you won't want to take it out!
Definitely worth what you pay for it!
