Disappointing

I ordered this system along with some extra modules to replace my Dark Energy II. I contacted Doëpfer for a list wich they kindly sent back to me. But it turned out quite disappointing. Everything feels cheap and flimsy, i am afraid to actually toch it because it might break on me. The midi interface has a really tight connector, no matter wich cable i use, i need to push and pull so hard that this module WILL eventually break. The knobs are small and turn heavy, connection cables/plugs are small and sometimes need double checking to make shure the connection is good at all because often it's not, 2 of the extra modules I ordered were defective straight out of the box and the worst part for me was that it doesn't sound like the DE2 at all, no matter what I try or how I wire it. So i decided to send it back, a big hassle because of the modules I already built in. I expected this system to be the do all and end all of synthesizers, but now I need to go look for something else again instead of making music, sigh.....

my first modular

I've been making music with fixed architecture synthesisers for more than 30 years. For a long time modular synthesisers were far beyond my budget and (i thought) beyond my expertise.

This Doepfer Basic System was my first foray into modular synthesis and what a great place to start! The system itself is fully featured with lots to get started with. The build quality is high, the modules and controls seem sturdy and built to last. The possibilities in this system alone are vast. One good piece of advice i took was to get a case with some room for expansion and this one has 84HP for you to fill with whatever you wish.

The case itself was no disappointment as it is sturdy, precisely built and smoothly finished plywood. I think these cases are beautiful just as they come.

as a side note Thomann's customer service is second to none and the synthesiser was delivered to me very swiftly and at a very competetive price.

First of all cudos to Thomann for a 1st class customer service!
I would say its a perfect entry to the world of moduler synths. It would have been nice to have an LFO modual with CV in to sync it to clock for instance.

The midi I/O ports on the A-190-4 are near on impossible to get midi cable in and out, some cables are better than others but still i worry i will break it and have never had a snug fit.

Case is nicly craftet but could have been sanded alot better.

No instructions for the idividual moduals but they are available online

All in all very happy apart from the A-190-4 midi ports
