MOTU 16A Interface
sammo-san 15.12.2021
i've been using a Behringer UMC1820 for a while, until i got fed up of the number of quarter-inch/TRS jack outputs. pretty much all the interfaces like the UMC have 10. i need more than that (only a few, but it makes a difference for me) and the 16A is, as far as i can tell, the only interface on the market with more than 10 (16, strangely enough! ;D)
MOTU don't pull their punches; they make high quality kit for top-shelf prices, and it took me several months to pluck up the courage to spend the whopping amount needed to own one. that being said, i don't regret it at all. it feels like kit that's been made to last, serve in a large variety of circumstances and meet the different needs that are a part of them.
the 16A can be networked with (i think) up to five other units, using ethernet. it has two sets of optical-digital ins/outs. it has wordclock.
and, the all-important 16 analogue ins/outs for use with DAW or recording software. you'll need an internet connection if you want to make use of it's built in DSP mixer; which is comprehensive to say the least (you access the mixer via a webpage, but don't be put off by that; it's well designed and has just about every option you could need), but just as an interface USB or Thunderbolt will be enough. there are several quick-setup options to choose from, which you can access via the free software, or you can use the unit's own display/front panel to tell the 16A how you want to use it, which automatically applies a default setup to the unit making it easy to get going. i'll be using this as a part of my live Goa-trance project, as it allows me the ins/outs i need for multiple software/hardware instruments.
in short; expensive, but i doubt i'll have to replace it. it's what i consider a 'lifetime' investment.

Tricky set-up but great soundcard
Anonimo 06.12.2015
Great soundcard but not so easy to set-up...

I'm a longtime MOTU user (15+ years) but I found the initial set-up of this soundcard quite difficult. I found the MOTU manuals etc are not very helpful with this.
Let me mention a couple of things here that might help others in the same situation:
When you launch the AVB Discovery App, it can seem like nothing happens. But the tiny app icon will appear in your deskyop menu bar (next to clock etc). Its easy to miss. You have to click on this icon, select your device and you will access the web control app in your browser.
I ended up accessing the web app via Ethernet cable, which led to my next problem. Apparently leaving the Ethernet cable connected can interfere with the correct operation of the Thunderbolt cable. My 16A wouldn't recognize changes in sample rate, or let me change sample rate manually. I could not discover the reason for this, and I even thought the 16A was faulty. Then on a forum I stumbled across the advice not to have both Ethernet and TB connected at the same time. This solved the problem.
Apart from this early confusion, I'm very happy with the 16A. It sounds great and has all the connectivity I need for my analogue gear.

great audio interface
marlasky 22.12.2020
I bought it after having too many synths to connect to my focusrite. The amount of inputs is perfect for my setup. An digital mixer is accessible using an app or webpage, which saves me from having to have space and budget for an analog mixer on my desk. Another great feature is DC-coupled outputs, meaning they can be used to send CV and gate signals to (semi-)modular synths. Latency using usb is acceptable to me as I am far from being a pro.
