An entry into the world of the alto saxophone

An alto saxophone is considered especially good for beginners if it offers a high level of sound dynamics and if it rests comfortably in your hands. The Thomann TAS-180 fulfils these criteria and is currently one of the most affordable Eb saxophones on the market. This saxophone makes a convincing case thanks to its balanced intonation in all registers as well as an extremely good response and a warm, centred sound. The body and valves are made of clear-lacquered brass, and the scope of delivery includes a lightweight case with backpack straps, a mouthpiece, a carrying strap, and a cork grease stick.

For those first notes

Thanks to its stable intonation in all registers and good response, the TAS-180 is excellent as a beginner's instrument. Worthy of mention is the saxophone’s adjustable thumb rest, which can be easily adapted to every hand shape, thus allowing comfortable playing with the right hand. The metal resonators placed on leather pads support the saxophones' clear and centred sound. An easily removable bell allows quick maintenance and repair in case of dents or other damage. What's more, you can achieve your desired sonic ideals with a mouthpiece that is suitable for the respective style of music. The required tuning (440 to 443Hz) is achieved depending on the position of the mouthpiece on the S-bow.

A perfect start

A saxophone for beginners should be designed in such a way that it can be played dynamically and with good intonation in all registers. The intonation possibilities shouldn’t be too extensive, but they should not be too limited either. The TAS-180, which was specially designed for beginners and those switching from a different instrument, fulfils all of these characteristics and is therefore suitable for a successful start. Whether you are a beginner or coming to the Eb alto saxophone from another instrument, the TAS-180 will be an excellent choice thanks to its price-performance ratio. This alto sax is also a great choice as an affordable backup instrument for woodwind players.

From beginner's model to open-air instrument

Until fairly recently, it was still hard to find a beginner’s alto sax that was both good AND affordable – but those days are thankfully over, as Thomann now offers a good solution with the TAS-180. Thanks to their pleasant playing feel and sound characteristics as well as their affordable price, Thomann saxophones have become increasingly popular in recent years. With the TAS-180, you get a solid starter model that you can use in many musical fields. This alto saxophone is suitable for learning the instrument and can also be used as a second instrument during bad weather at open-air events.

In the Spotlight: Eb alto saxophone

The Eb alto saxophone is part of the saxophone family, the other main members of which are the soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone, and baritone saxophone. The term "alto" stands for the vocal range. The Eb alto saxophone is a transposing instrument, which means that a C played on this saxophone corresponds to an Eb on the piano or the guitar. The C played on an Eb alto saxophone therefore always sounds a major sixth lower. This is why notes for instruments in C tuning are not compatible with Eb alto saxophones (separate notation is available, however).

A revelation after 28 years
Dani VM - Belgium 14.01.2020
just over 28 years ago, at the age of 24, the last Saxophone reed touched my lips, after having played the sax Tenor and Alto for about 15 years...
Now, today, January 14th 2020, I unboxed my TAS-180, assembled it, prepared and installed the reed, .... and played it like never before.
This instument plays amazingly well straight out of the box.
Sure, it is a student model, not a true professional Saxo, but nonetheless a nice and very responsive instument. A bit tough on the lower notes, but that will get better in time.
It actually brought a tear of joy to my eye, to find out that I could still play and that this relatively cheap horn sounded so good !
After drastic dental surgery last year I grew a little bit of hope that perhaps some day I would be able to play again.
And today.... I DID !!!
Just 5 days after ordering this sax on line, I had a beautiful, shiny and decent instrument that I will undoubtedly enjoy for some years to come.
THANK YOU Thomann, for bringing joy to my life at the age of (almost ) 53.

All in all this is a very nice instrument and well worth the money I have spent on it. Fun and lots of musical moments and memories from my younger years, withou breaking the bank. AWESOMENESS has a gold'ish laquer finish....

Well not knowing much about this world of instruments as a beginner, I found that this instrument served me fairly right from the start allowing me to proceed with my first steps as I discover more and more. For an excellent price, quality-wise and musically, you simply can't go wrong in choosing this instrument.

Thank you Thomann once more for the quality and also for the prices!

PS
great product, good service, satisfied customer
P. Sudar 29.01.2021
Hello friends!
I bought this saxophone online through your site after an unsuccessful purchase of a similar one from a local seller.
The saxophone is a gift for my daughter who attends elementary music school.
I have to admit that at the beginning I was a little skeptical about this way of shopping: how the transport will go, paying customs, and I have never heard of the manufacturer Thomann before (my mistake) ...
But, with your professional and kind attitude, you drove away all my dilemmas.
The saxophone arrived surprisingly quickly (although it was the holiday and New Year's season), it is well packed for transport and insured against damage.
Also (what is most important to me), my daughter and her professor are delighted with both the quality of the instrument's workmanship and the tones it produces. I'm not a musician, I'm just the dad of a musician who is in charge of support :) but I'm sure of one thing, I'll continue shopping with you in the future.
Congratulations Thomann and thank you.

MH
AMAZING STUDENT INSTRUMENT!
Mr. Harmon 23.09.2021
This instrument out of the box works well. My beginning band has about 10 of these saxophones and they are all holding up well. These are beating some of my older saxophone models like Yamahas, Conns, and Amstrongs. I have found these to be very in tune, easy to hold, and are a great beginner model. I highly recommend getting these instruments for your beginner students!
