Great Class D Amp
23.03.2017
The RH450 is 8.8 pound, 450-watt easy-to-use head. It has four bands of EQ, a tweakable compressor, a tube amp emulator, a tuner, a headphone amp, a direct out and three user-defined pre-sets. And it all seems to be high quality, and durable. The tuner is built in, always on, and super easy to read. It picks up notes quickly and the up and down arrows quickly home in on the in-tune dot. If you hit the mute button, the tuner goes one step further and uses the ring of dots around the bass EQ knob to provide higher resolution visual guidance. If you need to shift the reference pitch, the tuner can be adjusted when the amp boots up. On the back of the RH450 amp is a Speakon combo jack that lets you use either a quarter-inch or Speakon plug for your speaker cable. The RH450 should be loud enough for most gigs, especially since larger venues usually provide PA support. One of the nicest features on the RH450 is its pre-set ability. Dial in a sound you like, hold one of the three pre-set buttons for a couple of seconds and that sound is there whenever you press that pre-set. Useful if like me you use fretted and fretless at the same gig. Once you?re in action on stage, just push the Mute button and unplug. Plug in the other bass, pick the appropriate pre-set and unmute. One of the RH450?s ultra-helpful features is a lighted ring of red dots around each knob that advances as you turn the knob up or down. No squinting at pointers and small numbers on a dark stage; all your settings can be viewed at a glance (except for the Master Volume knob) in any light.
Tone ? the RH450 has warmth and tonal character that is very pleasant and can cut through. Besides the TubeTone effect, the RH450 has Active Power Management (APM), a circuit that kicks in when the amp gets close to maximum performance, compressing and limiting peaks of the bass signal much like a tube amp would. TC Electronic claim that APM makes its solid state watts sound more like tube watts.
Even though there are no tubes, you can get the RH450 to do a reasonable impersonation using the TubeTone knob. You get the sound and feel of both the preamp and power amp sections being pushed by your bass. Happily, the volume doesn?t start screaming when the TubeTone knob goes higher. Turn up the TubeTone knob and you get both the sound and response of a tube head.
The RH450 has more adjustability without adding more knobs: a Shift button gives all the knobs (except the Master) a second function. The four EQ knobs can then move their centre frequencies across a broad range. The TubeTone knob becomes the level control for your pre-set.
SprectraComp is another useful feature in Shift mode. It has independent compression for low, mid and high bands. A nice touch is that when SpectraComp level is set (and again, stored in memory), going out of Shift mode provides a visible indicator of compression. Hit a string hard and the ring of red dots around the Gain knob drops down, oozing back up as the note decays, and finally stopping back at the actual gain level you?ve set. In my opinion a lot of thought has gone into this amp and it is definitely one to consider seriously.

There's more than meets the eye in the RH450!
Pete6590, 06.02.2014
The TC Electronic RH450 knocks the idea that 'big is best' right out of sight! This small amp head, which is easily transported in a small bag, packs a lot of technology into a little space. The RH450 is reassuringly built, sits neatly and securely on your cab and even before you play a note it shows you mean business. The controls are straightforward and intuitive, allowing you to dial in a great sound quickly - even without reading the manual. However, a quick scan of the manual reveals just how much more there is to this amp. The illuminated display is fantastic for gigging. Simply great!
