At this price point: Excellent!!!

TrEr, 08.02.2018
Short version:

Excellent if you are looking for super cheap active monitors for a home setup and don't need a lot of low frequency extension.

Long version:

I got these for a home recording setup where I mainly edit projects that I bring home from my studio and sometimes do simple overdubs. For this purpose they are excellent.

I do most of my mixing in my studio so I did not get these monitors for critical listening. I would probably have gotten better (and far more expensive) monitors if I expected to do a lot of mixing on them. They are a bit lacking in the lows compared to larger, more expensive models so balancing the lows would involve a bit of guesswork. If I was forced to mix on them I would at least make sure to have a pair of high end headphones available to check the mix.

Having said that, they are quite impressive for the size/price and seem to work very well in my home environment (rather than in an acoustically treated studio environment). They have excellent clarity and apart from the slightly lacking lows (which are expected at this price/size) I actually think they sound great!

Build quality is as expected at this price point. A bit plasticky and cheap. On one of mine the front panel doesn't line up perfectly with the main cabinet so it looks a bit rough. It works fine though.

The back panel has both XLR and TRS inputs, a +4dbu/-10dbV switch and some basic HF/LF adjustments. Very sufficient for most home setups. In some situations it would probably have been more conveient to have the volume knobs on the front but I don't really mess around with them too much so for me it's fine.

It could be worth mentioning that both of mine came with some small white spots on the speaker elements and dust cap. It looks like tiny styrofoam particles (or possible paint spray) that had sticked to the surface. Most of them could be brushed off but some of them are sticking so tighly that I would probably damage the elements before I got them off. Both monitors were sealed in plastic bags so it can't be from the packing materials. It must have happened at the factory. Probably not the best quality control and a bit disappointing. It does not seem to affect the sound though and Thomann gave me a small discount for this. Not a big deal to me but they look a bit messy up close.

Conclusion:

These monitors compare very favourably to others I've tried in this price range. For my specific needs I'm very happy with them but if you want excellent low frequency extension or classy looks you should probably save up for something better.

Powered JBLs Welcome & sound Wicked good

Cochise, 01.01.2018
The pair of JBL's LSR 305 are perfect in a small space while allowing me to eliminate a stereo amplifier.

AS a guitar player, I like to be able,
when the mood strikes

1. To plug my axe in to my assorted low wattage amps of choice. I like the Fender Champ XD most of all.....while...
2. Playing electric guitar along to tracks. Accompanying my favourite recording artists songs. Seeking and Finding.
3. All while sourcing my Mac hard drives' .mp3 folder. In a way that won't spoil my equanimity with wiring difficulties.

Pro: With these active JBL speakers I don't need an audio interface to play my .mps. I need a minimal set up: a mono jack and a sound card.

Pro: The Bass is a lot better than I thought it would be. I could be thrilled even.

Pro: The high end is good too as far as I can tell.

Q: Are they truly flat?
Q: Are they near field or medium field? - not sure. Q: Where is my rooms first inflection point?

I can place them in my narrow space and get a sweet spot w/out too much trouble.

I did have to raise my buffer. Is this good enough for mixing with Ableton and Logic and Maschine? I do believe it is for a budding producer.

I'll need a mixer with 48 phantom power and USB or an audio interface to plug in instruments like guitar, bass and microphone into my computer. Then I could use guitar rig to record with perhaps.
Guitar Rig sounds fantastic.

I am considering the Yamaha digital mixers or the focus rite scarlet line of audio interfaces. I am leaning wards the mixer.

As my first set of active speakers I am quite pleased with these JBL's. They are perfect for my shelf style desk area.

However the chords are a consideration.
Each speaker has a power chord requiring standard current and each speaker needs to be plugged in to the 'stereo to mono adapter' leading to your sound cards interface.
Plugging a {Stereo-to-Mono converter} in to my Mini-Mac computers sound card seems to do the trick. Its a bit of a pain to have to turn each speaker on and off each time and perhaps you forget.
I can crank them pretty loud too before they distort.
Price seems worth the quality and weight.

Still the plug arrangement could be more recessed perhaps as one needs to be able to frequently access the controls at the back of the unit as well as to turn it on and off and to plug it in. You can't put it up against the wall and forget about it. You have to turn it on and off. Sliding each of them around a bit in my case.
Quite pleased thus far to be honest
Happy New Year 2018
