Beautiful combination

DocR, 20.02.2013
To the guitar: I have deliberately chosen this model because I like telecaster with humbucker in the neck position and single coil at the bridge well. Keyword "Keith Richards". Well, a Squier Vintage Modified costs only a fraction of a real old Telecaster or a current Custom Shop model, but still fun.

Own experiments with the installation of PAF humbuckers in the neck position of telecasters never produced the desired results due to the lack of fine tuning between humbucker and singlecoil. The Humbucker practically eliminates the single coil in classic telecircuits.

Not so with the Vintage Modified Tele Custom. The Fender humbucker does not quite as violently as a PAF and sounds more open, less centrally. Nevertheless, you get good, for hobby guitarists sure enough sounds with the "open G" mood.

The two pickups can be matched to each other in the middle position of the pickup selector switch. Or you use the selector switch for two different sounds or volume.

The varnishing is good, if applied also quite thickly. The dashboard had two layers of protective foil, as little could go wrong. The potentiometer knobs do not work very high-quality. Personally I also like the extremely high-gloss chrome parts not so good, nickel-plated Harware would be better.

The corpus does not seem to be from ash or alder - well, probably a train to the price. A constant annoyance on all newly bought guitars are the reinserted 9 strings - so thin threads let the guitar not sound right.

With a set of 10s and the re-adjustment of the three bridge strings, it now sounds better. The frets are well built and in order, but could be somewhat better polished. The socket I have tightened immediately, which is an eternal Telecaster weak point.

The playability is very good, the neck has a pleasant profile and the saddle is - apart from the notch of the deep E-string - also adequately dressed.

With the Vintage Modified series, Squier really has an alternative to the "real" Fender series and also some special instruments on offer.

After a few months of playing, the built-in 3-piece bridge has occupied me more and more. The original parts are very thick chrome-plated and have circumferential grooves for the strings. The difficulties to set this typical Telecaster bridge octavrein are well-known. More disturbed me, that the string distances due to the grooves in the attempt to improve the octave purity to become uneven.

So down with the Chorm parts and brass bridges with obliquely drilled bolt holes retrofitted (see Thoman accessories). The investment was under 20 euros, the conversion takes a few minutes and the adjustment of the octave purity is now better. Another advantage is in my opinion better sound with the brass bridges.

But this is certainly subjective.

The Vintage Modified Custom Tele has already been used in some gigs and sessions and shows first traces of use. The thick lacquer is not as robust as it looks.

For me, however, it has now become the main guitar because of its good sound and good playability, which means that some of the most important more expensive pieces are not allowed to go to the session.

One Squier ...

Sebastian199, 08.12.2012
... from the upper price range at Squier. What can I say: She is exactly what I expected and hoped for. It is well processed, looks great and plays great. The sound fits something like this. The thing to change is, in my opinion, are the strings! The 9s do not really please. Likewise, you have to schedule a new socket, because the plate sockets turn around, but the problem I already knew of the Squier Tele Custom II with the P90ern. It really does not have to be an expensive guitar, the amp is the amp anyway, then it is a basic principle with character and it has.
The finish is different than expected ... but very, very nice!

Clear purchase recommendation for anyone who likes to play guitar!

A short note to the style in which I am native and which my guitars have to endure, as I find the exotic genres in the reviews are often left out and not all guitarists blues and status quo play (that should not sound worthwhile! !). I mainly do post-hardcore, screamo and postrock. For this, a guitar (and amp) must be able to drive a good cleansound and the rock board a la Alexisonfire / Underoath. I myself play a Fender Bandmaster with matching Fender Box. For that the Squier is really ideal!
