Pleasantly suprised!
Paul3753, 27.12.2013
I bought this Goldtop Epi LP as a gigging replacement so I didn't have to fear for my Gibson LP Std, which when gigging has to be parked next to the drummers access path.

When I was shopping for a replacement, I read many glowing reviews about the new Chinese made LP's but I have always been a bit of a "name" snob; however being realistic, it meant buying an affordable but good sounding and playing guitar that wouldn't kill me if it were stolen or broken.

So I decided on one of these. Having bought a couple of guitars from Thomann before I was quite confident that if was no good it could go back without any stress. I do like to try guitars first but at this price I thought I'd take the risk.

I ordered it online as there was a deal on with a gigbag at the time and the price (at the current exchange rate) was £50 cheaper than any UK shop (not including the gigbag) - No UK shop had the Goldtop in stock at the time - only available to pre-order.

After ordering, I watched the excellent tracking system process it through to the UK delivery point and it turned up as predicted.
The double boxed package was perfect - no signs of rough handling.
On opening, I checked the guitar thoroughly and was delighted to find it completely flawless.

I was quite surprised at the finish of the guitar, the only criticism being the tops of the frets were slightly rough - and that was all I could fault.
The knobs are a little higher than on the Gibson but this actually makes them a little easier to use - the volume and tone pots are nice and smooth and work great.
Tuners are stamped "Grovers" and are smooth and accurate. No "pinging" from the nut as on my Gibson when tuning or string bending.
I polished the frets up and put some Ernie Ball Cobalts on and lowered the bridge a little and now it's faultless.

I compared my 2012 Gibson LP and this one back to back and apart from the Gibson having a fraction more "bite" I'd have to say I don't think anyone would be able to tell the difference in a blind audio test. Also, the Epi plays just as well as the Gibson, and may even be a little better finished! The Gibson smells better but I can live with that!

As a bonus, the gigbag included in the deal is quality - I was expecting a thin unpadded thing but this is also lovely.

To summarise - BUY ONE!

Don't be put off that it's Far Eastern, or that it's not a "Gibson". You'll be as surprised as I was, and I'm that impressed I'm going to buy another as a back up as I always take two guitars. Just can't decide between white or red - or black ( or all!)

Not a Gibson, but still a fine Les Paul
LightningBlues7, 17.11.2018
A very good guitar for the price. Epiphone always offers the best Les Pauls for those who don't want to pay thousands for a guitar. I got this guitar because my Gibson Les Paul Studio is not in shape for touring anymore and I'm not disappointed at all. Great feel, and a great sound, you forget you're playing an Epiphone at times. The beautiful goldtop finish is the cherry on top.
Granted, it has its cons. You will most certainly want to set up some things when it you first play it. The strings it comes with are not very good. But well, you can work around these things, tweak the guitar to your liking and you'll end up with a solid guitar.
It lacks that Gibson extra thickness, the neck doesn't feel as friendly, the sustain is not as great as Gibson's and it won't sound quite like you'd imagine, but it's extremely close and you're paying a quarter for what you'd pay for a Gibson Les Paul Goldtop.
Anyway, a great guitar that I'd definitely recommend to both beginners and experienced guitar players, I'm having tons of fun with it and I know it won't fail me live.
