Great for playing, not so good for recording DI
Victor J 22.12.2020
You've probably read tons of great reviews about the THR5, and indeed I agree with all of them in terms of sound quality, clarity, versatility, design, and so on. However, I want to add here a point of view about something not a lot of people share: recording via USB. As you know, you can connect your THR5 to a computer and use it as an audio interface for recording. If you're looking for a really minimal setup for your home studio (like I was), I'm sad to share that the THR5 doesn't do a good job in this area.

If you want to record one of the processed sounds of the amp ("clean", "crunch", "lead", etc, which are send through input signals 1 and 2), you might be happy with the outcome. However, if you want to use a digital amp sim like the ones from your DAW or NeuralDSP plugins, for example, you may prefer to use the DI inputs (3 and 4). Despite THR5's Impressive low latency, here are the main problems:

The output signal for DI is very low, and there's nothing you can do to control the gain for DI. All the settings for master, volume, and gain control affect only the processed sounds, not the DI. In my case, my guitar signal was peaking at -34db when recording, which is pretty low, creating a bad signal to noise ratio. When compared to Focusrite Scarlett Solo, for example, the difference in quality is gigantic, so I recommend you to use a proper audio interface for better sound recording instead of the THR5.

All in all, I really like this Amp for daily practice. I just had the wrong expectations in mind for recording when I bought it.

Ultimate amp for self production/home practice!
GiTi 10.06.2020
Only one word: great!

I use this amp for home practice and recording of demos.
This is a good amp under every aspect. Plenty of words of appreciation have been written over the years and I agree with every single one of them.
Sounds great and the modeled amps and effects provide all the basic options you need for practice and simple recordings.
The drivers' installation on PC is straightforward and no issues whatsoever have emerged while recording with Cubase (included with the amp) and other popular software.
The building quality is flawless and the amp is so compact and light that you can play literally wherever you want.
Only feature I miss: bass/mid/treble knobs available right on the amp (but you have to consider the size); anyway they can be set using the PC application (which offers extended settings and options).

Excellent amp
wavve 13.05.2020
Excellent amp, I leave in an apartment and I use it to practice almost every day. It's much more convenient than my big amp, I recommend it especially if you don't have that much space where you leave and if you want to be able to practice at a reasonable volume.
It's simple to use, I play mostly blues but the amp is versatile enough to accommodate all kinds of musical styles.
As usual with Yamaha, the product looks pretty solid, I think it will last.
And I love the "retro" look !

Decent sound and comfort
Nort 16.05.2020
I bought this to practice at home. Unlike the other transistor setups I used in the past it sounds quite decent. Not a tube amp for sure, but good enough for home.

JO
The perfect practice amp
Juan Orozco Villalobos 24.09.2019
The THR5 is a small amplifier designed for practice, and it does the job really well.

The emulation is really, really good. Saying this little beast sounds great is an understatement. The response of the 5 different amp models is very natural, and you can dial almost any sound you want.

It includes a USB cable to connect it to your computer and a license for Cubase AI. It also has a program you can use to tweak the parameters of the amp even further, in case you want to personalize it even more.

It has 8 integrated effects, all good quality, but the hall reverb is especially good.

This is an incredibly good practice tool, you can get great quality sound for an affordable price in a very small and convenient package, I'm very satisfied with it.

P
superb unit
Paul1812 08.08.2014
I find this more versatile, more compact and just as good quality as the larger (and more expensive) THR10C unit that I own. It's a complete steal at the asking price. Does exactly what it claims - provides inspiration in the form of high quality tones at low volume levels for practice purposes. Super quiet in terms of background hum/noise, genuinely useful tones, superb value.

I love this amp
TomGoss 18.08.2018
This is an excellent practice amp. Very well constructed and easy to use. Small and convenient. I like the pretend tube glow.
The basic sounds are just that....basic, but very good. You don't get the transistor radio sort of sound most small amps produce. It sounds warm, balanced and full. It has a nice range of a few clean, cleanish and higher gain settings and a few simple effects. Not a lot of options to alter them but l don't care. If you want more bells and whistles spend more money and buy something else. The hall reverb is awesome. If that was the only effect on it came with l'd still consider this amp a bargain.
I use it a lot...

Bon petit ampli de bureau
Anonymous 06.01.2016

R
THR 5
Rafael6465 15.01.2014
After having THR10C that I sold due to lack of gain. I must say that this amp fits exactly what advertisement says.
With the same watts than THR10 is smaller and sounds exactly the same. Excellent modeling no need more tone controls. One is enough. The amps work very good with the kind of amps it models. it works as a real amp. Perfect to use at home. Perfect mix with your musicphone or laptop. As it has less volume control than his "big brothers" is more easy to use. Keep it as simple as possible. I would recommend it hundred per cent. And if it is stolen I would look for another exactly the same.

Great little practise amp
Anonymous 03.04.2016
If you're like me and just started to try to learn how the electric guitar really works this is really a good option.

A few good pre selection of different settings and a good amount of effects. Good interface with computer use. A bit disappointing on the amount of pre sets found on Internet but nothing to do with product.

Very good built quality and very smart look as you would expect from Yamaha.

One of the best things about it is that you can practise at night or in situations that you can't burst the volume too high. Still fairly good quality coming from the 2x 5 watt speakers.

Thomann service 100% as always. Fast delivery and very helpful as usual.
