Yamaha THR10C
Gammamaster, 30.12.2017
Yamaha THR10C
Yamaha's third amp concept appealed to me for a long time, I didn't rush into buying one until they had ironed out the first generation niggles and also until had checked out the competition.
At my time of purchase (December 2017) there are plenty of alternatives now and I still feel the Yamaha offers me the best "third amp" experience.
I'm lucky enough to have a nice music room at home filled with guitars and amps.
I have a stack, (well a half stack - 100w Marshall JCM900 dual reverb and a 4 x 12 cab), honestly I haven't even turned it on in years.
These days I have a selection of small combos, three of the Marshall anniversary 1w's cover a lot of Marshall ground, (JTM1, JMP1 and JCM1), a Vox AC4 gets a lot of love and then a Fender Princeton '65 RI rounds off my little collection.
All the perfectly usable at home during the day but late in the evening they are all still too loud and I really wanted something smaller for the lounge so I can noodle around in the evening and nights without annoying anybody.
I have been using a little pignose, they are a one trick pony but I actually like it especially with a tele or a Danelectro but they need to be cranked to get "that" sound and cranked they are too loud for late night livingroom noodling.
And so to the Yamaha..... it's just fantastic, a very usable little amp that cover so much ground.
Very credible sounds from such a compact and intuitive little box, you can do loads with it hooked up to a PC but straight out of the box forget user instructions and just plug in and play.
I don't think it has a bad sound in it, I play mostly blues, country, rock, it can cover it all and as a self contained unit the effects are pretty good, it can handle pedals and if you need to shape your sound more it's up to the task but for me I wanted a simple practice rig so I stick to just one pedal up front, a boss looper.
I had little interest in the acoustic setting at first as I never used the piezo pickup on my Gibson hummingbird but actually I have been using it quite a lot along with the loop pedal and I'm so surprised how much my acoustic playing has improved, it's made practice fun again and I'm finding it's an inspiring little tool.
I'm not much of a bass player but I do have one bass, a fender jazz and an Ampeg combo, that's another amp that doesn't see the light of day, 450w is just a little too much for the house!!!!, so the Yamaha has also been used on the bass setting which originally I hadn't been interested in but it's so easy and convenient that I'm lifting the bass now, again it's making me play more which is never a bad thing.
I have found it's not just a little gimmick practice amp, it's really inspired me to play so much more than before.
In the last year I have bought some really nice (and quite expensive) guitars, this little Yamaha has done more for my playing and song writing than £7K of guitars.
Quite simply the best thing I have purchased in a very long time.

Versatile, affordable and very useable amp!
07.02.2017
This amp does many things, and does them well. As a start, it has 5 different classic amp models (Yamaha?s take on a Fender 65 Deluxe, Marshall Bluesbreaker, Fender Blues Junior, Matchless DC30 and Dr Z Mini Z) ? so approximately £6000 worth of equipment at a fraction of that cost. Of course, it has nowhere near the output of the real amps, but it does capture the essence of those sounds and allows playback at volumes reasonable for the home. Yamaha intended this line of amps to be guitarists third amp (hence the ?THR? naming), so it?s not designed for gigging or band practices, but instead offers authentic tone at lower levels that larger amps struggle with. The amp models are towards the lower gain end of the spectrum, but it is certainly possible to get a well overdriven sound with most of the amp models. In addition to the 5 classic amp models, there are also models for use with acoustic & bass guitar as well as a ?flat? setting for use with other instruments.

It also offers a range of modulation effects and delay/reverb (tape echo for the THR10C compared with digital delay for the other THRs) which sound decent and can be easily dialled in. The ace up the sleeve, however, is the THR editor ? plug your amp into a computer (Windows or Mac) with the provided USB cable, load up the software and you can tweak the settings to your hearts content. The editor also unlocks ?hidden? settings such as different cabinet simulation, additional effects ? compressor and gate, and much more control over the other effects (e.g. modulation depth, delay feedback level etc). Presets can be stored on the computer (so an almost unlimited number can be saved) and saved back to one of the 5 preset patches on the amp itself to allow use even when not connected up to a computer.

The styling is very classic and the amp doesn?t look out of place in the living room. It is smaller (and lighter) than I anticipated, but gives a surprisingly full sound for it?s size. Turn the volume up towards max and the amp does rattle a bit and the bass can become a little flabby but there is plenty of low end if you dial the volume back slightly. An aux input allows an mp3 player (or similar) to be played through the amp which sounds very good. A couple of orange LEDs within the casing give the impression of valves within which you?ll either love or hate (but again, this functionality can be enabled/disabled using the editor software). Other features include an in-built tuner, tap tempo for the delay and output to headphones.

The only improvement I can think of is for a DI output to allow the amp to be hooked up straight to a mixing desk.

Overall this is a perfect amp for having around the house ? it looks good and sounds great even at low volumes.
