The Loar LO-16 review

Johnj185, 26.10.2013
I bought this guitar as a beater, I wanted a cheap poly finished guitar for the winter as all my other acoustics have nitro finishes which are in danger of cracking(checking) when brought from room to room which sometimes have widely varying temperatures, it's an old house in the north of Ireland... I had done my research on this guitar & knew what to expect, I fingerpick country blues & ragtime so in my cheap guitar I wanted a 1 3/4" nut with a nice chunky neck & the same 24 3/4" scale as my Gibsons, the LO-16 ticks all these boxes & I'd read some very good reviews of this guitar & liked the 1930s Gibson styling & decided to go for it. When the LO-16 arrived from Thomann & I unpacked it I was not disappointed. Straight from the box the setup was almost perfect, the frets are perfectly level & nicely dressed, very little adjustment needed on the action at the saddle, none on the nut, & the intonation was close to perfect. I am blown away by the sound of this guitar at this price in fact at three times the price I'd be impressed, although it doesn't have an awful lot of sustain it has a real punch that more than makes up for it. The LO-16 is very loud & has excellent bass response for a small bodied guitar, string to string balance is very good. Nice bright sweet trebles with plenty of bite for single note soloing are provided by the solid spruce top & surprisingly warm fat clean mids. The guitar is very resonant & surprisingly harmonically rich considering the laminated mahogany back & sides, the overall sound is very close to the Gibson Robert Johnson which is amazing when you compare the prices. In the LO-16 The Loar have produced a very sturdily built solid little guitar, the neck feels fantastic, (if you like a vintage style fat neck profile) & a decent rosewood fingerboard with nice Gibson style low profile frets make the guitar extremely playable, I have barely picked up another acoustic since getting mine. The vintage style Grover three on a plate tuners although not totally in line with the 30s styling look nice & work smoothly & hold pitch very well.
One really great feature of this guitar is the fact that it comes fitted with a high quality bone nut & saddle, both perfectly made, fitted & nicely finished & polished, usually appointments reserved for higher end & boutique guitars only, probably a lot of the quality tones produced by this guitar can be attributed to the use of bone here.
The pearl & abalone Nick Lucas style inlay on the headstock is beautifully done, & while the neck is nicely finished & the off white heel cap & binding on the top & back looks
very classy the finish on the top & back is not perfect, but at this price who's grumbling ? The only real negative was the fact that the pickguard was made of the most awful white plastic, badly cut & finished & badly applied, however easily removed with a hair dryer and naphtha to clean away the adhesive residue, looks great now. I also changed the bridge pins & end pin which I have to say were probably the nastiest I've ever come across. However overall I'd have to say that this is an incredible guitar for the money, the best EUR249.00 I've ever spent, can't recommend highly enough!

Great value, first guitar I always reach for

Mattyc, 31.03.2018
Overall all great guitar for the money. Good option for beginner who doesn't want to have to buy again and upgrade a very basic guitar as soon as masters the basics. Also good for anyone who wants a well playing back up, or a guitar they don't have to be too precious about.

Out of the box the guitar played well and has a nice tone. Feels well constructed and after a few years I have had no issues with the quality...nothing damaged and still holds its tune. Mine hasn't been gigged ( I'm a bass player but always like to have a guitar about the house), but has held up well for house playing, few get togethers over the years and a toddler who wants to play the Bing Bong song from Peppa Pig every time he sees it.

I've had a few clear outs and replacements of intrsutments over the years, but for playability and a nice decent tone, I'll be hanging on to this one.

If your are after something the quality of a Lowden this probably isn't it, but if you want a great well priced guitar that can take a knock and not leave you in tears then I would definitely recommend.
