Small, clear, thoughtful

TPRST, 24.10.2013
I stood before the choice between the highly praised ZOOM H4N and the Tascam recorder. In the end I was particularly impressed by the more logical operation and the better processing of the Tascam. Perhaps it is also because I had to deal with Tascam devices before, but the menu design, as well as the allocation and arrangement of the keys, I find the Tascam much more conclusive and intuitive than the competitors.

Even small details like the built-in Neutrik XLR connections as well as the protector around the microphone capsules are very good. In addition, the case for the common everyday is in my opinion better built than the strange and probably lint-resistant rubber cover at the ZOOM.

The power supply I solve either via Eneloop accumulators (enough for a few hours) or with longer use over an additional USB power supply (I use that of my Blackberry and it works perfectly, besides, I have thereby saved another power supply :))

Sound Quality:
I have already run the Tascam with the internal Mirkos as a backup at several concerts (classical / acoustic as well as electronically / pop) and am surprised every time over the good sound. The limiter and the automatic level control work very well.
Mostly I use the Tascam but in connection with an SQN broadcast mixer over the line channel. Here the recordings are impeccable, a noise is not heard at all. Also otherwise, noise as I have often described here nciht. What is also the fact that I never give the Mirkofon directly into the Tascam.

Another positive aspect is the fact that updates are still available on the product page of Tascam at larger intervals.

Neutral:
- With the supplied accessories clearly the ZOOM recorder, if one really needs the supplied things. A protective box is indeed a fine thing, I have for the Tascam but eh a Petrolbags-Schutztasche added, in which he remains the whole time and still be wonderful to use.
- With me is already after a short time the rubber-cover of the SD card compartment broken off. But with fabric tape is something no problem;)

Negative:

- Noise: When using external microphones without an intermediate preamp, the recordings are always slightly noisy. This can be a problem if the level is low or when the language is low.
- Basic noise: No matter what kind of recording and source, you hear a noise from the headphones. This is very irritating at first, as it is not automatically heard on the recording. With a bit of practice you can tell the "real" noise (which is also recorded) from the basic noise. If you use only the internal microphones or a microphone directly to the Tascam, but it can be tricky
- Volume control: this is done by push buttons on the side and is transferred to the recording by using the internal microphones 1zu1. For external sources, the problem does not occur logically. But you can get out of the way if you can set the appropriate levels in advance. There is also the possibility to use the internal limiter and / or the automatic level control or to work with four-track recording with backup, in which the Tascam on track 3/4 records a copy of the tracks 1/2 with an adjusted reduced level. This is also safe from most surprises.

Conclusion:
For me, the Tascam is just perfect and I would not know why I should exchange it for another product in the next years. The operation is easy and self-explanatory, the offered and upgradeable features for pure audio recording (interviews, concert backups, Athmos etc.) solid and sufficient. Since I operate the Tascam to 95% behind a mixer per line signal are the noise problems for me rather negligible. Nevertheless a small deduction in the evaluation. Otherwise a clear purchase recommendation!

Price / performance k nig wanted - and found

NikolasK, 07.12.2013
Preliminary note: Since the range of the portable audio recorders is different, different applications and features are required, I can only evaluate this product by myself. I would like to take this into account.

I was looking for a portable multitrack recorder, in principle for the recording of samples / outdoor performances and recording of Atmo for music productions. After intensive research, I found myself on the candidate Tascam DR-40 and must say that I am completely satisfied.

Statement:
The Korg D3200 digital recorder, for example, Rode NT1A or Rode NT5, are of course "more" than they are But a) non-mobile, b) dependent on non-mobile power source, and c) the cost of the purchase is also in a different price class.)
-> I can use the resulting recordings (reworked) well, but also clearly that good recordings need of course sensible equipment, but also a savvy user. Everything else is sorcery.
- Equipment: I am missing nothing on the device. The operation leaves nothing to be desired. All features are good and fast to use. The built-in microphones provide enough room for recording batches with the two setting settings. The shooting modes are thought through and useful.
-> Tuner, built-in loudspeaker, USB- / NiHM-Akku- / Alkaline power supply possible; There are many helpful features on board
- Processing: Consistently positive. The device is made of light, yet very resistant plastic - the purpose very well adapted. The microphones are well protected by the brackets. The Neutrik XLR jack inputs are high quality and well built. After 6 months (partly intensive) use (including recording standing in the Atlantic) everything is "as on the first day".
- Lautzeit: Completely satisfactory with both alkaline batteries and high-performance batteries (NiHM), even with 4-track recordings.

Finally, I would like to point out that a large number of additional purchases are generally recommended - generally for portable recorders! I would like to address the following accessories:
- Windscreen (required!)
- recorder spider (see microphone technology -> not necessary, but partly very usable)
- NiHm batteries (long-term recommended)
- Thread adapter to adapt between camera and microphone stands (for me the best "5EUR accessory investment")

If you want more, perhaps you should look for much more expensive devices - but I have in this price category can not constitute real competition, zoom devices included.
