Strymon OB.1

Effects Pedal

An all-rounder for professionals who do not always need the full (distortion) scoop, but prefer to make good stuff with clean or slightly distorted sounds. Just clean sounds are often lacking in sustain; the softer, more delicate notes are sometimes swallowed. In this the OB.1 proves itself to be an excellent compressor. A Clean Boost, e.g., helps push solos up to a nice volume and can also lend tube amps the necessary thrust where there needs to be a little more distortion. The control to effectively shape your sound is also on hand, with the option to selectively boost trebles or mids. For this purpose, internal DIP switches allow you to have a good fumble around with the boost sound.

Very well thought out and effective in the truest sense of the word!

StrymonOB.1

Tom553, 23.05.2013
Bought this on behalf of our lead guitarist so this is being reviewed by phone!
All he says that after many years of using alternatives he has at last found the pedal that gives the best balance in his rig.

Hope that means something as I am mainly a KB player!

In my opinion too expensive. And not flexible!

Chris-to-fair, 14.01.2014
Regulator: Comp, Volume (so quasi plug'n play). The boost unit also offers boost controls. The linear boost can be converted into a Treble or Mid-Boost using a mini-toggle. The internal dip switches also allow you to choose between mid-boost and mid-boost modes, and "rounder" or "shrill" treble boosts.

Clear: If a treadmill has 2 functions, it may be slightly larger. On the board, it makes sense to have a Comp AND a clean booster. Or in other words: A comp with rhythm and lead volume (the boost can not be activated alone). So'n Boost is perfect for clean solos in front of a clean amp; Or to boost distortion pedals or distorted tube amps. So'n Boost, along with a sustain-extending Comp, should be a clean thing.

However, I have to say that I can not see absolutely why this Strymon compressor should pay more than 200, - EUR.

Good: It is cleanly processed, solid and looks good.
But: In the "compressor" area, it is not flexible. ITEMS. (However, flexibility is not always everything.) There are certainly people who want exactly the OB.1 sound and are satisfied with it.)

Anyone who thinks he gets an EVERYTHING-in-one package for the grand prize is wrong. ("All-in-One" sounds somewhat modest here.)
"EVERYthing" in terms of Comp means for me at least TWO:

1. Classic Old School Sounds are offered. So roughly the Dyna Comp / Ross / Marshall ED-1 direction. Suitable for some radio and country. Also just times with neat "Squash".
2. Modern fields are covered. This means compressor sounds, which do not bring any or almost no loss of height (even with hard and fast stops), and discreetly work, so crass "squash" or volume jumps are not available.

Now: The OB.1 does not offer the first package (squashy sounds) GAR. At least with strat and medium to strong single coils, there is no pumping and squashing even at high comp settings. Also, the compressive lifting of the signal and "breathing" with soft strokes (for me eg needed for Skunk Anansie's "Hedonism".) Here I play neck SC, plectrum completely loosely guided / held, plectrum works for bell-like sound in front of the neck SC; Already over the fingerboard) is missing for my terms completely.

The OB.1 sounds - for me - almost 1 to 1 as the original Bypass signal (60er Strat -> Fender Blues Deluxe 40W, 1x12 "Combo") not only in the frequency playback, but also, what the Stop, the volume, the dynamic feel.

A minimal thickening, or toning the sound is perceptible. Perhaps I have synonymous but imagined, since I saw the glow of the status LED. At Comp-Levels between 7 and 10, a working of the pedal - rather than a discreet limiter - is perceptible. In other words, in terms of the naturalness of the OB.1, one could almost assign 100 points. But that can be used for a placebo pedal as well. (Buy an empty housing, connect input and output jacks directly and mount an ineffective switch.

So honestly, I'd rather get a neutral clean-boost pedal (like the first version of the MI Audio Boost'n Buff) for what the OB.1 does, and get it on 1 to 1 level or minimum boost . Set the bypass signal. At a correspondingly high stage volume, a Fender Blues Deluxe / Deville etc. with activated Boost'n Buff is also minimally more compressed than without. This is then however the behavior of the amp, the minimal more signal purely.

The boost unit of the OB.1 is in my opinion completely in order. However, the liner setting is slightly nonspecific and broad before OD-kickers. If you want a sound and well-to-play sound in the mix, these attributes quickly lose. Even with low-weight treads such as TS-808 or KORG OVD-1. Here, in my opinion, the mid-boost (internal dip switch on "high mids)" or the Treble boost operation (on "round heights") practical.

If you wanted to activate the Comp with Treble- or Mid-Boost but still before 'nem clean amp, that sounds again not usually so great. But the boost mode toggle is fortunately outside !! :)

Conclusion:
With the low capacity of compression offered by the OB.1, it is no wonder that it hardly has any noise, is responsive, and does not need an attack or tone control. Probably the result was embarrassing to the Strymon people, so they donated the booster as a purchase. As a sustainer booster to give HiGain sounds the extra quota Soldano-Sustain, suitable. But nothing for classic country or funk.
