The best headphone amplifier.

Dmitry D., 11.04.2016
This is a perfect match for the most advanced headphone, the HD800, You ask why ? I'll Explain: this is the hp with biggest sound-stage in the market. And this amplifier making it even bigger. It make the sound as balanced as possible.
The impact is very punchy and clean. The features (cf, center, balance is great edition), Can be used for balanced headphones. The power of this creature, is endless: Yo can gain the rca inputs, you can gain the output. +12, +22 and +24 DB... The specs are world record, and you defentely can hear it. The sound is silky , but when there is problems in mastering, you can immediately notice them. I know about SPL, is a very good brand. Now I know even more. Will check another products for sure!

The ultimate not only for recording studios

kronos, 02.01.2018
but also for home users who only want to passively listen to music via headphones.

"A new sound experience" was the title of my review of the Phonitor mini, which I initially purchased because I was skeptical that the SPL matrix would have any audible value for my application. After only a few days with the Phonitor mini, I was thrilled with the matrix, but wished me finer settings that only the Phonitor 2 offers. I also bought this and sent the Phonitor mini back within the 30-day money back period. My high expectations for the Phonitor 2 were not disappointed.

A .. The matrix function of Phonitor 2
(1) It was developed for professional mastering, but also creates a new sound experience for the passive music listener with suitable music genres.
(2) For the application of the SPL matrix, particularly suitable music genres are (I am Classical listener) chamber music and solo instruments and voices; With symphonic music I can not detect any significant advantages of the matrix with the used headphones AKG K 812 (open) and K 872 (closed).
The former music genres, however, are a true playground for the countless matrix combinations that Phonitor 2 offers; the effects of useful matrix settings are audible without much effort.
(3) With extreme settings, I was able to even mitigate the pronounced in-head localization of my electrostatic headphone.

B .. To the sound with deactivated matrix
Whether it really sound differences compared to the Phonitor mini or the hitherto used by me Palmer HDA 02 are audible, could clarify objectively only a correct blind test, for me the technical requirements are missing. I have not been able to find blind tests in the audio press for decades; they are laborious and the testers would have to fear the embarrassment of being unable to identify the test equipment statistically significant (at least 75 percent hit rate) or to judge one and the same device differently during the listening test. Sound differences between properly constructed analog semiconductor electronics are very low. In any case, the technical data of the Phonitor 2 are beyond reproach.

C .. marginal criticisms
(1) In order to use the dB-scaled volume control with my AKG headphones in its most sensitive area (usually 10 o'clock to 4 o'clock with the AKG K 872 and 11 o'clock to 5 o'clock with the AKG K 812), I have the at 0 dB FS reached peak input level set to minus 5 dBu (the "DIM" setting of the TC Electronic BMC-2). Thus, the pointers of the VU instruments of the Phonitor 2 - as already concluded from its technical data - usually do not move at all; only in the case of the (with classical music) rarely and only reached as impulse maximum level (0 dB FS) or just below they shake in the top by a millimeter. Unfortunately, one can only reduce the sensitivity of VU instruments, it would make more sense to increase it. For high-efficiency headphones, the VU instruments only contribute to the visual beautification.
(2) Like the Phonitor mini, the Phonitor 2 is not short circuit proof. Before plugging / unplugging the headphone plug, it is advisable to turn the volume down completely or to switch to "Mute" (the VU meter lighting changes from yellow to red). I always do both for security - like the Phonitor mini.

D .. Advantages over the Phonitor mini:
(1) much finer matrix settings,
(2) much more extensive equipment such as
(a) additional output for which the matrix can be activated, so that also electrostatic headphones can be connected,
(b) sensitive balance adjuster (in spite of the excellent synchronization of the volume control in some recordings actually necessary),
(c) via any IR remote control (learning takes only 30 seconds) controllable motor drive for the volume control,
(3) exquisite workmanship,
(4) better life expectancy, as the Phonitor 2 - unlike the Phonitor mini - has no dust-prone vents, but was generously dimensioned to prevent heat build-up.

E .. Conclusion: With its unique matrix circuit, the Phonitor 2 is unrivaled. Given its equipment, workmanship and specifications, the price is considered low compared to the prices for meager high-end hi-fi equipment without balanced inputs. The price difference to the Phonitor mini is appropriate. My recommendation: If you have very high-quality headphones and are keen to experiment, you should be able to afford the Phonitor 2.
