SPL MTC 2381

Monitor & Talkback ControllerThe Monitor & Talkback Controller MTC 2381 combines volume control, source management and speaker management for stereo monitoring with comfortable talkback and cue functions. Thus it is the ideal DAW complement in all areas of sound processing and reproduction:

  • Stereo productions / recording studio
  • Film and video post-production
  • Video & computer game production
  • Audiovisual media / multimedia production

With the MTC 2381, any DAW-based studio can be extended independent of the system by an indispensable stereo monitoring function. As an individual mixture of music signal and mix signal, a latency-free cue mix can be created for the musician. A built-in electret microphone with omnidirectional characteristics is available for talkback communication in order to be able to speak from a greater distance. The Talkback function can be remote controlled via a foot switch connection.

  • Completely analog volume control without VCAs, DACs, etc.
  • 6 Stereo inputs (four balanced and two unbalanced sources)
  • Balanced XLR outputs for three pairs of speakers
  • Slave output
  • Talkback: built-in microphone, separate output and input for footswitch
  • Cue-Mix: separate output, musician level, mix level and volume control
  • Dimensions (HxWxD): 91 x 272 x 220 mm
  • Weight: 2.3 kg

All Good! But the -20dB reduce when talkback is ON is too much for me, sometimes it's hard too have both control room and recording room clear hear each other(because the singer's voice has a -20dB dim when we are in talkback mode)

Very thoughtful

The MTC 2381 is probably one of the most expensive monitoring controllers, but certainly one of the best. One may wonder why one should spend so much money on the control of the listening volume at least, where most audio interfaces already have a controllable listening system. But: it is worthwhile in this case. The MTC also offers a complete monitoring control for up to four stereo sources in addition to the sum output of the DAW, as well as a 'Musician' input, which can be used to mix the music signal signal for its headphone mix. This is then output via the separately controllable 'cue mix' output. Up to three pairs of listeners can be operated, alternatively as well as simultaneously. The built-in talkback microphone, the dim, mono switches, and the switchable headphone output (intended for listening in the direction) make the MTC a complete replacement for the listening control of a well-equipped mixing console.

The headphone mix for the musician is output separately via the 'cue mix' output, whereby a weak point of the MTC is revealed: when the talkback switch is actuated, the 'cue-mix' path occasionally makes it noticeable. This seems to be an electrical problem, not mechanical, since the use of a foot switch did not help. But I've heard that SPL knows this problem, and may have helped. It is also a bit uncomfortable that the controller for the control room volume has a clear grid. In practice, however, this little beauty error has never disturbed me. The device is as a whole very high-quality processed, as one knows it from the younger SPL products, and in the concept really thought out. There is also a 'slave-out' for the connection of external level indicators, an additional output for the pure talkback signal and a connection for commercially available fuzzy switches to activate the talkback function.

Overall, a purchase I have not regretted.
