Still the best handheld device for critical recordings
DrCheese, 05.09.2019
Yes this is pricey, but it is still recommended as the best recorder of this size for travel.
The highlights: sound quality of the preamps and the built-in microphones, adjustable mic angles, rugged design and class-leading battery life.
The microphones have been improved since the D50, they are very decent but something like a Rode NT4 plugged in still offers an advantage, at least in terms of self noise. The new mics also seem to offer a bit of ultrasonic frequency response up to about 30-40 kHz; this is useful for sound design and I was (just about) able to record bats' echolocation. The sampling rate option of 192 kHz helps with this aspect but to get the most out of this you will need external mics.
You shouldn't 'hand hold' this while recording using the built-in mics - they are too sensitive and and are not sufficiently acoustically decoupled from the body. Rycote offer a lyre suspension but it seems to have received mixed reviews considering its price. I have found that even a Gorillapod-type tripod attached offers an improvement.
From my research the D100 still beats the newer Sony offerings such as the D10 in terms of sound quality. XLR and phantom power options are tempting on the newer device but for pure sound quality I would still recommend the D100; other alternative choices can be made such as battery powered external mics or a small battery-powered phantom power supply to obviate this. It would still have been nice to have seen Sony provide balanced inputs and phantom power on such an expensive device - a breakout cable to XLRs could have used to preserve the form-factor. Also be aware that a power supply is not included but the reliably long battery life makes this less necessary. Inclusion of a soft case and windjammer is welcome.
I can recommend the Zoom Universal WSU-1 Windshield as a significant upgrade over the included windshield. It noticeably reduces more wind noise and it is also easier to get on and off!

Very Good
29.08.2016
Its built in microphones are very sensible, so you must learn how to set the recording level appropriately (I use it for field recordings and it is necessary to be aware that louder noises can appear and cause unwanted distortions).

It is necessary to use a stand or anything else that can prevent you from touching directly the device while recording.

The resulting sound is stunning considered the small dimensions of this device.
The noise reduction function (N/R -100 dB), makes it stand out from any of its competitors, that can only record in louder situations, while the PCM 100 can easily record in very low noise environments (the town at night, the countryside, or similar) nearly without preamp noise.

Battery last very long compared to other devices.
The display is bright and can easily switched on and off from a dedicated button. Built solidly.
Very easy to learn and use from the very first time.

The only cons I can mark here is the lack of dedicated jack/LNR inputs (it has a stereo mini jack input only), but to be honest I don't miss it so much.

If you want a very good portable device, this sounds like it's the best device on the market.

successor of pcm-D50
jkc, 06.12.2018
I always liked my PCM-D50 (sound quality, battery life, build quality - once it landed on a hard stone floor and nothing happened).

PCM-D100 goes a bit further, More formats (for geeks - see the specs), less noise, greater sensitivity, better screen and few other updates and minor things.

Comparing to D50, the sound seems to be more neutral (D50 is warmer, tested on both on internal mics and binaural OKM's). So for typical field recordings, this is a matter of taste - whether you like the warmth and noticeable but pleasant noise floor (D50) - or clean neutral clarity (D100).

The only thing to pay attention to - is handling noise. Without good wind protector (not the included one) - it may serve basic purposes, but for more professional work - at least the windshield from rycode will be useful here. Also, you want to get some handle or tripod, instead of keeping it in the hand. Otherwise you may hear your fingers creaking.

In terms of achievable sound aesthetics - I don't know if there is any better portable field recorder than sony. Next one would be probably the one from sound devices, much more expensive than this one.

It's sad that it can't work as an audio interface. Lack of wifi or XLR is not really a problem.

Premium recordings at high flaws price
Evy09, 16.01.2018
Excellent build quality, it's like a tank. There are really few devices out there with clean and dynamic sound like this guy here.
You can record at 176/88.2 Khz, and this is a plus; sound quality is a premium/zero noise-like; secondly, you get both digital in/out through mini-toslink connector, this sound really good too if you wish using an external converter.
That said, this ain't a flawless device and these are the main ones that you soon pick up at day one:
_High handling noise (this is crucial), handy recorders are called so for a reason and, even if on one side
metal case means more solidity, on the other side of the field you're gonna get a highly self-resonant device.
This is not good. You're warned before shooting the ball here.
_This is already a heavy unit, and you don't even get XLR inputs with Phantom, this neither is good in that external mics means extreme flexibility, and this unit doesn't get this. Think twice.
_Capsules are highly sensitive, a lot condenser-like, but they are fixed: yes, change angle and stuff, but at this point, a couple of standard condenser mics just makes more sense.

A great unit overall, but a lot of stuff to fix on the new lineup.
