High End Headphone Amplifier and DAC

My previous speaker has already said pretty much everything. I can fully agree with the content, and I can take a little bit more.

I use the Shure SHA900 mainly mobile, but also on the PC combined with the Shure SE846.
To the sound I can say that I am very impressed compared to the mobile phone or PC, it is a difference like between heaven and hell.
Above all, the noise on low volume are just as blown away. My mobile phone was therefore not listenable on lowest volume (with a quiet song), since the noise was louder than the music itself.
At a recording I could even hear that (as I guess) a microphone was connected (noise was suddenly audible, but only with the SE846, song: Patricia Barber - Nardis at approx. 2:27).
In general, much more details come to the fore and you can really sink into the music.
Also tested was the Sennheiser HD650, which the converter could operate despite the 300 Ohm without problems.

Depending on the sensitivity of the headphone, the output gain can be set to High or Low. This makes it possible for the SE846 to have a finer setting in the lower area. Important for the SE846 was also the low output impedance of 0.35 Ohm not to falsify the soundcharacter.
Connected to the PC, the converter is also detected under Windows 10 as well as Linux immediately, an ASIO driver is not available. On Windows you can use the WASAPI exclusive output eg. under Foobar2000 to avoid unnecessary resampling. The input frequency is also displayed in the settings of the converter under Audio.

To the charging function I then still have something to mark. Under BatteryInfo you can determine the number of charging cycles in the settings as well as whether the temperature is in the normal range. If the battery should give up the spirit, you can change it through Shure. Unfortunately, the charging function can not be permanently deactivated. As soon as the device is switched off, charging is automatically activated again. I would have wanted a permanent setting or a switch on the case, because I have to work with the smartphone every time the store has to issue, because I would not unload my Handyakku. There is a star trigger in the operation.

Last but not least, one could point out that the supplied rubber bands are extremely handy for mobile use with smartphones.

Conclusion: Except for the charging setting an excellent device with a precise, detailed and noise-free sound for high and low impedance listeners, with the parametric EQ also good in sound adaptable.

Superior in sound and easy to handle

Portable headphones are available in all versions and price classes. There must be a good reason to get a representative of the highest price level. What the SHA900 offers, I will describe below. At the same time, I shall not enter into rich basses or spherical heights; The sound reproduction is simply immaculate and outstanding. But I would rather classify the sound behavior as analytical and neutral, not as beautifying.

The SHA900 consists of four functional circuits: a powerful analog audio output stage, a digital / analog converter, a digital audio processor and an analog-to-digital converter? but one after anonther. The power amplifier drives every kind of headphones effortlessly, with large reserves even for high-impedance headphones. Also very low analog input levels are amplified sufficiently; Very high input levels can be attenuated by 10 or 20 dB. A limiter can limit the maximum playback level; Unfortunately, the limit value and the settling time are fixed, but a point deduction. The volume adjustment takes place by means of rotary encoder in 25 steps evenly over the entire range; Even with the highest playback volume, the sound remains distortion-free. If only the amplifier is used, an operating time of max. 20 hours possible.

If the device is used as a D / A converter via the USB input, a smartphone (iPhone or Android) or a computer (iOS or Windows) can be used as signal source. In my case, I use Microsoft Vista or Win7, the device was easily detected and installed as a headphone output. This allows the playback of material with a 24-bit to 96 kHz sampling rate. The built-in rechargeable battery can be charged alternately. The SHA900 also produces an enormous sound precision from data-reduced MP3 tracks, which is superior to any analog computer output. This means that the device is on a par with many comparable and less expensive offers.

The special feature of the SHA900 is the possibility of digital sound control by means of a parametric 4-band equalizer. The menu is controlled via a menu-controlled LED display. 4 memory locations are preset with an EQ setting, 4 others are neutral. All settings can be changed, the current frequency is displayed graphically. The tone setting can be immediately acoustically controlled and then stored or discarded. There is a level filter for low and high frequencies, alternatively with steep or gradual transient response, plus two adjustable bands each with 3-stage band width selection. Lowering or raising is possible by max. 6 dB possible, in the case of overlapping, the setting values ??are offset with one another.

As a special feature, the SHA900 also incorporates a high-quality A / D converter, so the sound effect is also available for analog signal sources. And that makes this amplifier unique! However, the use of the sound control is at the expense of the operating time, which is then only about 10 hours.

It can easily be the impression that the sound effect is only a gimmick, comparable to some 3D space simulations, which avoid a user who is most interested in the highest sound control. But far from it! The equalizer is an excellent tool to optimize the sound behavior of a headphone, or to adapt it to your hearing. Whoever wants or needs to judge a sound mixing by means of headphones, or who wants to conserve his or her hearing and reduce certain frequencies, is well-served with the SHA900. The entire handling is simple and intuitive, so that you do not build up defense against too much technology.

Another word for the device firmware: This allows a direct percentage display of the remaining battery capacity in the display, in addition to the display of input levels, selected volume and EQ profile. The firmware can be updated via the Internet with a special software, which can be found on the Shure homepage.

There is a lot of cables and adapters attached to the device, so the operation should be possible immediately. A protective cover for the full metal housing is not supplied, but an exact matching hard leather cover is available separately. With this cover, the SHA900 acts like a flat man, without the cover like a table fire? In any case very stylish.

A weakness is not concealed: the operating instructions are kept understandable and also in German, but extremely scarce? Whole 4 pages in any language! Anyone who is not familiar with the setting of a parametric equalizer is left alone. Obviously, advanced audio enthusiasts or audio professionals were chosen as the target audience.

Thomann gave me? How many times? After a short time, reliably and impeccably the SHA900 sent. Also the dispatch packaging was not objectionable.
