Schaller Mag Pickup

David8617, 25.06.2015
Ok so these things are often frowned upon in the double bass world - but only by those who play at sensible volumes. I play DB in a high energy acoustic pop band with full drums and it's not a quiet polite band, we play pubs mainly and often stuffed in a corner with my amp & cab right behind me which is not ideal for feedback!!
I was finding with piezo pickups I was having to cut the eq (4 band semi parametric) all over the place to get the required volume which messed up the tone to a point where I just wasn't happy.
Ok so mag pickups don't sound as true as piezo and certainly for normal quiet jazz gigs I will use the piezo that is still fitted but the tone with mag at volume is BETTER than the tone of piezo with eq cut to avoid feedback. Having both fitted is the best of both worlds.

Complementary sound source

Upright man2, 07.04.2018
The Schaller produces a sound that seems to focus on the lower mids. The tone is based on the strings rather than the body of the bass. Hence the tone is more tight and less boomy. In the higher register it sounds thin and tinny. So as a sole source of sound I would not use it.

However, when I blend its sound with my Realist Copperhead on a two channel amp , it adds just the right tight mid range tone I was looking for. Now I have the deep and woody sound of the Realist and the defined string sound of the Schaller.

The product is solid and well made. The four little screws that came with it however, did not fit the holes to attach the pick up to the fingerboard. I had to drill the holes on the pick up to widen them. I did not expect that and it really surprised me. How hard is it to supply screws that fit right away?

Now that I have successfully installed it, I am happy with the Schaller as a complementary sound source.
