Die Eigenschaften der Hölzer beschreiben schon die Art des Basses, nach dem ich gesucht habe: Der im Vergleich zu Erle relativ schwere Esche-Body (ist keine leichte Sumpfesche), dessen Gewicht aufgrund des relativ kleinen Bodys aber noch voll ok ist, der Ahorn-Hals und das schöne, dicke Stück Palisander als Griffbrett sollten schon die Voraussetzung dafür sein, dass der Bass einen eher tiefmittigen Sound hat.
Die Verarbeitung ist generell gut, insbesondere kann man sich bei Sandberg auf die hervorragend abgerichteten Bünde verlassen. Der Hals und die Bespielbarkeit sind top, der Bass hängt ausgewogen am Gurt. Wenn man etwas kritteln will: Am Holz selbst gibt es ein paar kleine Macken, eine an der Halstasche, eine am oberen Griffbrettende und eine in der Aussparung für die Klinkenbuchse. Alles keine echten Probleme, es ist halt Handarbeit, aber mein VS4 war schon etwas sorgfältiger verarbeitet und deshalb gibt’s keine 1+.
Nun zu den Pickups und da gab es eine echte Überraschung: Als ich den Bass eingestöpselt und das erste Mal gespielt habe, gab es auch in den Einstellungen „Nur Bridge-PU“ und „Nur Hals-PU“ selbst vor einem großen LCD-Screen kein Brummen. Das kann bei Single Coils, als die die Pickups bei Thomann (Anfang September 2020 zumindest noch) beschrieben werden, eigentlich nicht sein, also habe ich recherchiert: Sandberg selbst nennt für die TT-Serie als Pickups „2 delano JMVC FE/M2“ und delano beschreibt diese Pickups als „split coil humbuckers“. Aha, das macht Sinn!
Und mir passt das auch gut ins Konzept:
Der Sound selbst ist sehr variabel, grundsätzlich eher „fett“ als spritzig, hat aber schon einen guten Attac, wenn man den Bridge-Tonabnehmer bevorzugt, selbst im passiven Modus hat er enormen Druck auch in den tiefen Tönen und der aktive Sandberg-Standard-2-Band-EQ passt hervorragend zu diesem Bass. Es ist tatsächlich mein erster Bass, bei dem ich in der Aktiv-Variante auch mal die Tiefen ein klein Wenig reduziere, wenn ich mal nicht das volle Brett möchte.
Also: Der Sound ist schon anders, als man das von einem Jazz Bass mit Single Coils erwarten würde, aber mir gefallen die Sound-Möglichkeiten durch die Bank sehr gut.
Insgesamt: Sehr empfehlenswert, wenn man einen Bass mit diesem Charakter sucht.
