A small and wallet friendly microphone

12.04.2014
I bought this microphone mainly with the intention of recording the ocarina, as well as using it with Skype. Other microphones considered were the Samson Meteor, Blue Snowball and Blue Yeti.

Being a small condenser microphone - and at a low cost at that - I realized that the microphone might not be perfect for the job, but at the same time felt that I wouldn't be losing too much money if it wasn't up to my standards. A bunch of favorable reviews on the Internet helped me decide as well.

First of all, I heard a lot of reviewers saying it's small but I was still surprised when I unboxed it. It really is ridiculously small and will fit quite nicely on a laptop monitor.

Setup was easy on both Mac/OSX (Mavericks) and PC/Windows7 (64-bit). Simply plug the microphone into the USB port and if necessary select it as an input device.

It has 3 switches: cardiod, cardiod -10dB and omnidirectional. The first two are directional, meaning that they will focus on picking up sound in front of the microphone whereas the omnidirectional mode will pick up sound 360 degrees around the microphone.

It will pick up a lot of background noise, even in the -10dB cardiod mode (which I use all the time). Using it on Skype and facing me, the person I'm speaking to can still hear someone cough several rooms away in my apartment (which, admittedly, does not have a lot of fabric and cloth to pick up the noises).

The sound quality whilst recording is a whole lot better than the internal dual microphones on a Macbook Pro Retina, and it's also a whole lot better than any headset I tried recording with. The microphone will simply not be as overwhelmed by the high ocarina notes. The quality is however not perfect, and it will still take some skills in audio mixing (compression, equalizing, reverb and so on) to get it to sound as good as it can. To the microphones defense, audio mixing skills are probably necessary regardless of the microphone being used unless the recording is made in an ideal environment with a lot of sound dampening.

Compliments were given about the sound quality on Skype, with the recipients thinking that it was a more expensive microphone than it is.

For the price, it's easy to recommend it. If you want something that is significantly better, you might end up having to spend somewhere between 5 and 10 times as much.

Samson Go Mic USB

Daniel7436, 03.02.2015
The Samson GoMic - This is a decent USB microphone to record lectures, podcasts, video / presentation narration, or for communication (skype).

Although its no good for jamming or gigging you could record yourself and an acoustic guitar and/or a group of singers far from drums and a loud bass player.

It has -10db pad for high volume applications with 2 polar patterns (omni / cardioid) for a variety of applications and a headphone jack for no-latency monitoring.

The stand is very functional and the rubber gaskets and spring feel robust and heavy duty although the microphone body seems to be of a cheap plastic. It comes with a lovely carry case to keep put dust.

The stand does squeak when the microphone is being positioned, so don't go moving it whilst recording. It also doesn't balance too well on a table because the USB jack is on the opposite side of the stand, making it tip to that side easily. Finally be very careful opening the clip when releasing the microphone out of it. It is quite stiff and it might fly out of your hands.

But it is such great value for money, however you use it. I use it to record myself and my quiet electric or acoustic guitar
