Love this "el cheapo" piece
funkysoulmate, 16.07.2019
I used to own this really cheap mouthpiece before, so I did know what to expect.
I knew it would play completely out of tune (way to flat). So I did a small modification, the same one I did many years ago.
I took a hand saw for cutting metal and took some 5 millimeters off of the shank. And voila... plays in tune.

Not only that, it has an amazing sound from top to bottom, very suitable for rock, funk, etc...
My soprano truly sings with this mouthpiece. Why is this piece (still) so cheap?

Why spend more money, if so

If the Bobby Dukoff mouthpieces are known as a 'Roaring Piece of Iron', it is by no means exaggerated to call the Rico Metalite a 'Roaring Piece of Plastic'. One should not be deterred by the habitual color of the mouthpiece, there are really nicer colors than this mouse gray. But with the color, the circle closes towards Dukoff. Not only the inner life - which has more influence on the sound than the material itself - but also the color are strongly inspired by the Bobby Dukoff D series.

If you are looking for a penetrating, harmonious sound and do not understand the mouthpiece as an investment, you will find it here. This mouthpiece is a serious alternative to others, but the 10X cost. By the way, Mindi Abair is supposed to play a Rico Metalite on her soprano ...
Now to the mouthpiece itself. The mouthpiece is due to its material extremely stable and insensitive. I moved to the Metalite M7 after a year Graftonite B5 and do not regret it. The changeover was much easier than expected, despite the significantly larger opening of the railway. It has fully met my expectations. The tone in the lower octave is simply awesome - you can play loudly and quietly, the volume is there and the overtones are clearly audible. In the upper octave, this effect is somewhat weaker and the highest notes in the M7 version require a lot of training and a good approach.

In my opinion, the most beautiful tone is associated with neutral to dark filed leaves. I have achieved good results with Vandoren Traditionals, Vandoren JaZZ and Hemke (caution, ligature low enough!). The Vandoren V16 has not worked well for me. A test with Vandoren JaVa and La Voz is still pending.
