Stunning, fun guitar. But...

Craig I., 17.06.2016
My partner was feeling left out after I bought the children their first guitars. She has developed a serious Nashville habit and as soon as I saw this guitar I knew it would be perfect for her to learn on.

Pros:
The matt vintage burst finish, the resonator tailpiece, the floating bridge all make this a very pretty unit. The finish attracts oily fingerprints but that's just life.

The sound is really very bright. It may not be to everyone's taste but as a guitar to mess around on the tone is quite pleasing.

Cons:
The fret ends are barely finished. They look like they've been cut off with pliers. Not smooth against the fingerboard.

The main reason for rating this down on quality was that the second of these I received (the first one was neck snapped by the courier in transit) had holes in the bottom and the wood in the waist of the unit had folded, rather than keep a nice curve. This guitar is made from 'white wood' which I guess is about as light and fragile a material as you could make a guitar out of. It will not stand up to any rough handling and my advice would be to carefully inspect yours for these flaws as I think the materials lead to a bit of hit and miss with quality.

Value for Money:
I have grown used to Harley Bentons smashing my expectations of cost v quality. This guitar won't do that. It's not a super expensive guitar, but it feels pretty close to the right price for what you get. It looks great but you're not getting a bargain here.

Finally:
As I mentioned, the first of these guitars I received was snapped in transit. It felt like I was being interrogated in the return process, by both Thomann and the couriers. It wasn't a quick or pleasant experience. The second guitar was barely B-stock quality and had to be returned. This process seemed to take forever. From the receipt of the first guitar to yesterday, when the third one arrived in good condition, was about three months. THREE MONTHS! I have previously only had good things to say about Thomann but this experience has tested my loyalty.

I am, despite all this, very pleased with the Recording King RPH-07 Dirty 30s Harmonella ;)

Update:

Having had this guitar for a month or two now I have had to rate it down.

1) The third guitar has developed a ding at the bottom of the soundboard. We have been super careful with this guitar knowing already how fragile it is.That this not inconsiderable dent has appeared with such careful handling is an indictment on its build/materials quality.

2) The sound. What was a quirky, bright sound to begin with has become, now that we're used to it, a pretty cheap, hollow, tinny sound. It sounds cheaper than it ought to for this price.

3) Setup. The action on this is ridiculously high. It's hard enough to intonate a guitar with a floating bridge, but it is impossible with such a high action. I have tried to adjust the truss rod for greater neck tension but up to a point the truss rod gives resistance and, knowing the poor quality of the materials, I fear that if I force the truss rod it will lead to irreparable damage to the neck, perhaps the whole guitar. I am tempted to shave the wooden bridge down but the amount the action needs lowered is almost all the play in the bridge. I'm going to give it a go and see how far I can push the setup, but I do not hold out great hope.

All in all I am pretty disappointed with this guitar. I'm going to hold on to it for a couple of reasons. It is still a gorgeous unit hanging there on the wall. It does provide a different sound that none of my other guitars have. It gives me a chance to further hone my guitar setup skills. But mostly because the returns process with the previous two guitars was so painful that I would rather buy a whole new guitar that might arrive within a few days than go through the process of returning this and the headache that would cause me.

Disappointed

Brian5148, 07.01.2017
This is the first guitar that have bought from new that I have found to be almost unplayable. It's a cheap guitar and meant to represent a poor mans guitar of yesteryear but I really couldn't recommend this. The action was ridiculously high and I had to turn the truss rod to within an inch of its life to get it anywhere near acceptable. The fret edges are very sharp and the general finish is poor. Looking into the sound hole I could see light through the binding which is a new one on me. I thought hard about sending it back but am keeping it as a challenge to see if I can turn it into something useable. I think there are better options out there for anyone looking for a cheap and cheerful instrument. Having said all of that , Thomann service was first class as always.
