A good banjo at a great price

Glen V., 25.08.2014
This was my first banjo - I felt that its pointless being cheap...because a poor instrument, of any make, will hold you back. I researched Banjo brands and noted that Recording King is well respected. This model is sold by Thomann at a super price, even compared to the US. However, and there is a "but", I also learned that banjo's need to be "set up" properly. They are unique instruments in that they can come apart completely - and if not put together carefully in the first place your instrument will be almost unplayable. For guitar players, this is not just a matter of "action", fret buzz or neck setting. The skin head must be properly seated, the neck must fit tightly and level, the skin must be appropriately tight and the "floating" bridge must be correctly positioned. I knew nothing of this when I received the RK from Thomann, but a visit to a Banjo set-up specialist (and a further 100 euro expenditure) has left me much wiser and with an instrument that I love to play. Those harmonics are sweet!. I should stress - this is not a criticism of Thomann, theirs is an excellent price, but bear in mind that attempting to play it, "out of the box" is unlikely to be satisfactory (NB A friend of mine bought cheaper model from a local shop telling me "Yes, they will set it up". No they didn't ! Banjo set-up requires expertise - this shop specialised in guitars and sorry, that's not enough). One small tip - this banjo, with its heavy brass tone ring and resonator back is quite weighty (apparently this is normal). Lighter banjo's are around, e.g. open-backed with thinner tone rings - so easier to carry around, but you will get a correspondingly thinner sound. The RK-R36 has a lovely full, but clear tone. I'm very happy with it.

Auweia: Chinese production

Volker560, 07.02.2013
So first of all is a banjo with these features, so mastertone tone ring, appealing fingerboard inlays, nickel-plated hardware, a reasonably designed tailpiece, for this price extremely favorable. Except for a different head plate the Gibson Banjos differ from the bare facts also not substantially of this, cost however several thousand euro.

However, I doubt the manufacturer of this instrument somewhere in the Far East knows how to write quality at all.

The bridge can be thrown straight into the trash can and the strings immediately afterwards. Well a reasonable neatly manufactured bridge cost 3 Euro and a set of strings in about also. Then one could already live well with.

In my first specimen, however, the frets were obliquely incised, clearly visible to the naked eye. So I could not live any longer. I wonder how such a thing can go through quality control, if there is such a thing at all. This item I then complained, of course Thomann-typical completely problem-free. However, I have preferred to personally add that for distance reasons, not everyone can be so simple. I did well.

In my second copy, the plastic knob of the vocal vertebra was broken, and the fifth string was not on the fifth covenant because the saddle was not deep enough. In addition, the resonator had a processing error.

I have now complained. Again Thomann typical: completely problem-free. We then together with the Thomann-Werkstattmann from two Banjos one made and the saddle a bit nachgefeilt the saddle. So one hundred percent does not fit yet but for me it was then okay. However, the glued head plate at the back has a distinctly different wood color than the rest. The neck with the oblique frets did not. Well, the back of the head plate ..., beautiful is not but that can be forgotten.

At home I wanted to pull up new strings and opened the lid of the tailpiece and had the same time in the hand. So you take a pair of pliers and bend it so that it fits and does not fall by itself. The whole tensioning screws of the skins were all loose and the banjo comes without a mounted bridge.

So you have to do a complete banjo setup, and then you should already know what you are doing and what screws you have to turn (there are many)

Conclusion: As a second (or third) instrument quite useful (that was with me the goal), if one knows what one wants, understands from the matter what and claims so long until a guilty banjo rauskommt.

As a beginner's instrument it is not necessary because of the enormous quality fluctuations, because the novice simply from ignorance such complaints can not complain. He can not make a banjo that fits and the people who can do that are very rare in this country.

I decided with the intention of the more expensive model R36, which is different from the model R35 in nothing but selected necks and resonators because I know about the partly very poor quality of far-eastern production. But if the parts of this model are already selected ... o God
