I bought a pair of these for myself a month ago, and I have just taken delivery of another THREE pairs ... that's how highly I rate them.
As a bass player, I have always been irritated at how difficult it is to hear the bass properly when playing mp3 files on the move. I have tried numerous top brands of buds, and right now I own headphones by Bose, Sony, Sennheiser, etc.
From the very first time I used these PJB headphones I've been hearing things in the bass register that simply could not be heard previously. The overall sound and clarity are amazing but, for me anyway, the clincher is the bass reproduction.
I should stress that this clarity for the bass is achieved at all volume levels, which is even more impressive. You don't need to have your music crazy loud to hear the bass properly.
If you're not familiar with Phil Jones (the PJ in PJB), he's an English expert in bass amplification who runs a very successful business in the USA. His bass amps and cabinets are well known to bass players, and very well regarded.
The Phil Jones PJB H-850 headphones seem quite appealing on the surface; headphones tailored specifically for bass players who want to practice without disturbing anyone else, and they do just that. The sound quality is great and it really transfers the real tone of the bass. You don't get the projection you usually get with a cab, but it's a huge improvement on any off-the-shelf audio headphones you'll find. My only niggle with the sound is that there is a faint bit of fuzz when playing 5-strings and below, but it wasn't enough to put me off using those low notes.
They are comfortable and I find that I can wear them for at least 2 hours before even realising they are sitting on my head. Other than that, the cable it comes with is great - it's flexible and can be detached. They're also brilliant for normal audio playing.
