Is it worth spending more money?

Francesc569, 11.07.2013
At the moment I work in the technical department of the most important TV of my zone (TV3, Televisió de Catalunya) and before I was 13 years working in recognized studies of postproduction for publicity, cinema and TV.
Nowadays I own a 25m2 home studio with good acoustics, and as a solo electronics I use a FOCUSRITE ISA Two that through excellent line transformers goes to a DBX160SL compressor with its ADC converter.
To test the Oktava MK-105 I have compared it with an AKG C414B-XLS, placed next to each other, with the DBX160SL in bypass, only as ADC, recording with both micros at the same time.
First I recorded a male voice and then a classical guitar with arpeggios, strummed and chopped.
The Oktava needs a few dBs more amplification to get the same level as the AKG but as it has a reasonably low background noise no problem.
The first implication is that the Oktava is more like a U87 with its emphasis from 3Khz. For male voices makes it easy to put the voice track in the mix. With the classical guitar happens the same. Give this small emphasis that facilitates mixing Without having to equalize anything or very little, in the middle of other instruments. Compared to the 414, it may not be the best choice to record a grand piano, violins or a coral, but for many things the MK-105 seems a good choice, and is worth a little more than a third The AKG.
Gone are the noisy electronics of the Oktava MK-319 I got in the 90's and their awkward spider stand to use. The 105 has a spider very well finished and resistant, and at first glance I can not say anything bad about its electronics. Maybe that's why nobody has dared to modify it as in other models of Oktava.
For value for money I recommend it.

Octave makes really nice mics with good price / performance ratio.

Features is actually hardly .. no switches for lowcut or so ... thus 1 star trigger for the fixed kidney without adjustment possibilities ..
Workmanship good (but not perfect). Massive Russian die-cast housing: with the nice wooden box there is a good travel companion.
The Vocalmikro has sharm and the big diaphragm of the former Oktava flagship micro, which unfortunately is not produced anymore. Nice the front gold-colored metal basket, since one knows where one must cleanse.
The sound has something. Clear, transparent not dyed, low noise, sufficient level. Habs in a special case (very dark, full female voice) a Brauner Phantera, which is otherwise my first choice with vocals.

Can be modified (see press report on the product page), eg with a different capacitor, then the techn. Values ??are "worse" but the sound is subjectively rounder. Even in normal execution the Oktava is a good choice.
The spiders (to be purchased separately) are solid and also allows a copfober assembly.
The Popkiller from Oktava (Thomann article number 242944) is an excellent idea: it is securely and elegantly attached to the (or another) spider - also for other mics.
