Open and natural

Jack G., 12.09.2013
I bought these omnidirectional capsules to try to get a more open sound from my Oktavas, and I was pleased with the results overall.

I do a lot of location work, using a stereo pair as the main pick up. In a church, these omnis were great for picking up the direct sound of the guitarist, while also picking up the ambience of the church. The sound I got was very open and natural. The bottom end of the guitar came through very big and thick, which was lovely for the classical piece we were recording. As a spaced pair, the sound was very enveloping, which is exactly what I was looking for in an omni capsule pair.

I've also used them for steel string guitar and mandolin, where they turn in great recordings as well. Bright, but full.

I have found these microphones noisy on occasion for quiet sources, but this could also be to do with the preamps I'm using (TC electronic Konnekt pres and SPL Goldmike), which are not the quietest preamps available.

It is said that these mics compare favorably to Neumann KM184s. I have not had a chance to compare them, but I'm very happy with the sound.

From the perspective of a piano player ...

Florian202, 18.03.2011
I bought the ball capsules a year ago to my MK 012 kidney stereo set to be able to use in acoustically good spaces also times balls. Use the whole on a Marantz PMD 661, recently I had the opportunity to compare the famous Apogee duet.

All in all, it is two very good balls with a richer (much better than the kidney capsules) depth reproduction and relatively linear frequency response. The clarity of the heights lacks something, but can also be due to the directional characteristic itself.

What moved me to (only) four stars in the sound is the self-noise (at Marantz and Apogee approximately the same). With my Canton LE boxes it is barely perceptible on the monitor (HSM80) and the headphone (Shure SRH 440) but already. It depends on the type of recording; When the wing is taken, hardly any noise is perceptible, with AB and open cover only lightly over headphones, with room microphone in about 3+ meters distance in the headphones yes, on the HiFi boxes easily.
In the end however again positive: the Oktava spheres form the wing (and also choirs) very well, depth reproduction and, in spite of the small membrane, warmth of the sound convincingly convince.
I especially like the mics with romantic piano music, for baroque and modern I would vllt to some "sober" mics grasp. Chamber music and choir goes quite well.

So if you are under 500 euros before a purchase decision, I can recommend the mics for classic recordings of choir and grand piano. In any case you should generally try ball capsules times. For me the kidneys in these areas are now hardly an alternative.

So two good ball capsules for 150 euros, with which one (some basic knowledge) good to very good classical piano recordings hinbekommt from me clear purchase recommendation =)
